For more than 13 years, Local Harvest has been working toward a simple but important goal: growing Maui’s capacity to feed our own community.
Hawaiʻi imports much of the food we eat, making our islands especially vulnerable when supply chains are disrupted. Building a stronger local food system means growing more here, but it also means strengthening the connections between farmers, markets, local businesses, families, and communities.
In this video, we share some of the work happening across Local Harvest — from growing and distributing local food to seed saving and research, farmers markets, home delivery, and creating value-added products from what we grow.
The 2023 Lāhainā wildfire reinforced just how important strong local relationships and food networks can be during times of disruption. It also strengthened our commitment to building a food system that can serve Maui for the long term.
Our vision is ambitious: increasing Maui’s food self-reliance to 50% by 2030.
Getting there will take all of us — farmers, businesses, researchers, policymakers, and community members. Every garden planted, local product purchased, farmer supported, and connection strengthened helps build the system we need.
We invite you to watch, share, and be part of the conversation about Maui’s food future.
