Want to know a candle-making secret? Soy wax can be a little finicky. It’s naturally prone to bumpy, lumpy, and sometimes downright imperfect tops.

So when I pulled this Kitchen Spice candle off the cooling rack and saw this beautifully smooth top? 😍😍😍😍

Friends, this is hard to achieve.

A smooth top like this is the result of everything coming together just right—the wax at the right temperature, poured into the jar at the right speed, in a room that’s the right temperature.

Basically, this Kitchen Spice candle represents the dreamy, perfect pour. I actually had four of them in this recent batch!

Will every candle come out looking this perfect? Nope. That’s part of working with soy wax and making candles by hand.

But when one does? You better believe I stop and admire it. 😂

I have been largely ignoring the changing seasons. But today I got the scarecrow out and put him in his rocking chair. I also added a wreath I'd made - I guess my fall decor is based around burlap and denim.

Next Friday all of my live porch plants are moving inside for the season - and maybe I'll add some pumpkins on the porch then.

Lately, when I’m home, I’ve been leaving a candle burning on top of the stove and rotating through some of my fall favorites.

A few are candles I’ve purchased from other candlemakers — Kentucky Butter Rum from Light House Candles in Mt. Sterling and Autumn Crème Brûlée from Modern Zen Candles in Berea have both been in the rotation.

And, of course, I’ve been burning some of my own.

One I keep coming back to is Autumn Leaves.

Here’s the funny thing: Autumn Leaves isn’t one of my best sellers. People pick it up in wax melts, but the candles tend to get passed over. I think it’s because it’s one of my more subtle, earthy blends — cedarwood, maple leaf and acorn.

But I personally LOVE it.

To me, this is what fall actually smells like. It reminds me of a crisp afternoon in the backyard with leaves falling all around you. Or Thanksgiving afternoon when everyone wanders outside for a pickup football game and the air has that unmistakable late-fall smell.

I almost said it reminds me of raking and bagging leaves, but absolutely no one needs a candle that reminds them of yard work. 🤣

So Autumn Leaves may never be one of the stars of the Pea Pod Country lineup. It might not even appear in the shop next year.

But it’s definitely one of the stars in my kitchen.

This summer I spent a lot of time working to establish the flower gardens around our new front porch. It certainly smelled good out there — and I learned a few things along the way. 🌸

The hummingbirds, butterflies and bees LOVED the zinnias, blanket flowers and black-eyed Susans. And I loved them, too.

Just not in this spot. 🤣

I didn’t keep them pinched back, and they got tall, unruly and eventually flopped over into what can only be described as a flower jungle. Next year, I’ll have a different plan.

I also learned that lavender apparently loves gravelly soil. It took me three rounds of planting — and I managed to kill two plants in the process — but I now have a few that are really thriving. Fingers crossed they overwinter well. 🤞

The blue hydrangea taught me that the spot I thought was shady in the late afternoon and evening…is definitely not. It’ll be moving next spring.

And the celosia? Not at all what I expected. I had never seen colorful little brain flowers before. 😂

Finally, I learned that those gorgeous flowers spilling out of the hanging baskets in downtown Lancaster and Nicholasville are petunias. I always thought petunias didn’t like the heat.

Apparently, I was completely wrong about that, too. 🤣

So that’s the first summer of the new front porch garden: some successes, a few casualties, several surprises and plenty of notes for next year.

- Frankincense & Myrrh (wax melts)

Sunday is was 90 degrees. Today it didn't top 70. Bring out those crockpots girls... fall is here with all the good smells. And clearly I'm obsessed with my home smelling good.

I use my crockpot to make pot roast, all kinds of soups and even apple butter. The only downside is smelling whatever is cooking all day long and having to restrain myself from digging in before it's done.

I’d love to have a wax warmer in my bathroom. That seems like a place where a good smell would be a good thing, right?B...

I’d love to have a wax warmer in my bathroom. That seems like a place where a good smell would be a good thing, right?

But we call Max and Mason “The Devil Twins” for a reason. If I added a wax warmer, I 💯 guarantee there would waxy paw prints everywhere.
