After much thought, we have decided to offer the best representatives of our small flock of Navajo-Churro heirloom sheep for sale as we shift the focus of Hellbender Farm toward more flowers and produce. Our first preference is to sell the 9-10 best (best genetics, coats, and hooves) sheep including our livestock guard llama to someone who will continue stewarding this unique heritage breed while allowing our gelded guard llama to maintain his strong emotional ties with his sheep friends. Keeping the flock together would be our ideal outcome, though we will consider selling individuals or smaller groups if we are unable to find the right home for everyone together.

At Hellbender Farm in the mountains of northwest North Carolina, we've worked hard to build a healthy, low-input flock using management practices that emphasize resilience rather than routine treatment. Our sheep are managed through intensive rotational grazing and are selected for natural parasite resistance. We do not rely on routine deworming. Instead, we have always used FAMACHA scoring and careful observation to identify animals that struggle with parasite loads, and those individuals are removed from our breeding program. Over time, this has allowed us to develop a flock that performs well under pasture-based management while helping avoid the development of dewormer resistance. Our goal has always been to produce hardy, productive sheep that thrive through sound genetics and grazing management rather than medication.

Our guard llama, Wyn, has been an exceptional protector of the flock and is deeply bonded with his sheep. He has lived with this flock for his entire adult life (he’s now 4 years old), and we would very much like to see him remain with at least some of his sheep companions if possible. His well-being is important to us, and we'd love to see him continue doing what he does best alongside the animals he knows.

If you're interested, please send us a message introducing yourself and telling us a little about your farm, your experience with sheep, your grazing and parasite management approach, and what you're hoping to do with Navajo-Churros. We'd love to know where they're going and ensure they're a good fit for both you and the animals.
