Nothing says summer like sweet strawberry season and boy, have we been enjoying ours! Delicious over a sweet shortcake, baked into my favorite strawberry pie, or boiled into Emy's yummy strawberry syrup, these fruits are just the burst of sunshine we need to truly celebrate the start of summer.

‘Every good gardener kills plenty of plants’, isn’t that how the saying goes? If that’s true, then I must be exceptionally good, because dahlias and I have had… a history. A dramatic, soap‑opera‑level history.

My brother sent me dahlia bulbs (again), and I even bought a few more myself because hope springs eternal. To my absolute shock, my first beautiful dahlia of the season.

The first year, I planted them straight into our heavy clay soil, which apparently doubles as a plant‑smothering, dream‑crushing bog. Those poor dahlias didn’t stand a chance. They turned to mush faster than you can say “well… that’s unfortunate.”

But after adding compost, fluffing the soil, and giving them some tender coddling, I think we’re finally getting somewhere. I’m cautiously optimistic — the kind of optimism where you don’t say anything too loudly in case the plants hear you and change their minds.

If these beauties keep going, they might just be the stars of the summer show, carrying us through the heat with big, bold, look‑at‑me blooms.

Stay tuned… and cross your fingers. You might just see them making their grand debut in the newest bouquets.

Last January, I harvested stock grown in the hoop house. I was so smitten with it that I planted more for the field to see how they would do. While they were a little shorter, the soft pastel colors were perfect for spring. And the fragrance. Oh my goodness! So, so amazing.
