Do you have a rooster? If not, you need one for Flock Management. Even if you have 25 hens for an egg laying farm, at least 1 rooster is important to keep your hens less stressed enforces a social construct.

Roosters are workers, not pets. Don’t baby them. They are supposed to be tending to their flock, a sentinel and protector, maintains the pecking order, and escorts hens while they free range while alerting them if he finds food or sees danger.

It is actually a beautiful thing to watch chicken behavior. Try it.

Yesterday, a customer told me she had been treating a new Ameraucana hen for mites because it had no feathers on its backside. She had even been washing the bird daily for a couple of weeks.

“That’s not mites. That’s a Rumpless Araucana. It’s supposed to look like that.”
