I think this is one of the biggest differences between decluttering when you’re younger and decluttering in midlife.

By now, we’ve lived a few lives.

We’ve had different careers, hobbies, homes, routines, relationships, and seasons with our kids. And somehow, pieces of all those old chapters are still sitting in our closets, garages and cabinets.

I don’t want to spend the next chapter of my life managing things that belonged to a previous one.

I want more time for the things I enjoy now. Reading a book. Going for a walk. Traveling. Sitting outside. Doing absolutely nothing without feeling like there’s always something in the house I should be dealing with.

That’s a big part of why I declutter.

What would you like to have more time for in this chapter of your life?

If you’re decluttering in midlife too, follow along. 💗

When I went through my divorce about 10 years ago, I let go of half my belongings.

What surprised me most was how much lighter I felt afterward. I found a new freedom I didn't know before.

That experience completely changed the way I look at stuff.

Now at 60, I don't want to spend my time managing things I no longer use, need, or even love.

I want my home to be easier to manage, with more room for the things I actually enjoy.

And after 10 years of helping others declutter their homes, I've seen how easily we hold onto belongings from chapters of our lives that have long passed.

I'm curious, which of these nine things are you still holding onto? 👇

I didn’t realize how many clothes I was keeping for all the wrong reasons.

My closet was full, but somehow I still had nothing to wear. Sound familiar? 😂

Here are 5 reasons I kept clothes I never wore:

1. They were expensive mistakes 💸 I felt guilty getting rid of something I had spent good money on. But keeping it wasn't going to bring that money back.

2. They held a memory. ❤️ A dress from a special occasion, something I wore on vacation, or a piece that reminded me of a certain time in my life. But I eventually realized I could keep the memory without keeping every piece of clothing.

3. They were cute but uncomfortable. Too tight, too itchy, shoes that hurt my feet. I loved how they looked, but never actually wanted to wear them. What's the point?

4. They USED to be me. My style has changed over the years, and so has my life. I was holding onto clothes that belonged to an older version of myself instead of dressing for the woman I am today.

5. I might like them when I lose the weight. I had clothes waiting for a future version of me. Meanwhile, they were taking up space and making me feel bad every time I opened my closet.

These days, I'd rather have fewer clothes that I actually love wearing than a closet full of things I keep making excuses for.

I'm curious, which one of these 5 is YOUR biggest reason for holding onto clothes? Tell me in the comments! 👇

Sometimes getting started with decluttering has less to do with the clutter and more to do with getting yourself into the right headspace.

These are a few slightly sneaky things I do that make it easier for me to begin.

After years of decluttering homes for a living, I’ve learned that getting started is often the hardest part because it already feels like too big of a task.

I’m curious...

Do you do any of these too?

Or do you have your own slightly sneaky trick that helps you get started? Tell me in the comments. 👇

If your house feels messy all the time, it’s exhausting.

Not because of a few dishes or a blanket on the couch… but because there’s so much you don’t use, love, or need anymore.

That’s the part most people don’t realize.

At some point, it’s less about cleaning… and more about curating what you actually want in your home.

Once you start looking at it that way, everything gets easier.

If your home has been feeling like too much lately, this is a really good place to start.

Comment CALM and save this for later.
