Last week a fifteen-year-old steer with a six-foot horn span backed off a trailer into my barnyard, and Curious Bleu — who has not hurried anywhere in three years — hurried.

Molly Potter and Rose DeFreitas were 11 and 12 the summer they showed up at the Miles Smith Farm Summer Camp in 2022. They met on day one. Each was handed a calf to train, and that's when it started — friendship with each other, and love of cattle.
Four years later, those two young women hauled two pairs of my steers to the Hopkinton Fair. All winter and into the spring, Molly and Rose drove to my farm to work their teams. They'd listen politely to my training suggestions. Then they'd go back to their real instructors.

Two Reasons Cattle Make Excellent Therapy Animals - Cattle are "Now" creatures. They let the past go where it belongs — behind them, and not to be relived. Plan your next steps, then quit fretting over them. Trust that you'll do your best, and if that doesn't work, trust yourself to find another way. Be Like a Cow

Curious Bleu at the 2022 Highland Games, accompanied by Jim Leahy on the pipes and Loclan on board. Bleu will be at the games this year, but with only one of his majestic horns. He lost the other in an accident. We call him the Uni-Cow.

I spend a chunk of every August with scissors in my hand, prying burrs from bovine ears. Here's the annoying part. These plants are valued by others. https://milessmithfarm.com/blog/cleaning-cows-is-a-labor-of-love
Visit my cattle (mostly burr-free) TODAY Saturday, August 29 from 1 to 3 p.m. Adults are $25. Children are free. Miles Smith Farm, 56 Whitehouse Rd., Loudon, New Hampshire

Training calves is a lot like training children. Both have short attention spans, and both would rather play than work, as I discovered at the 2024 Miles Smith Farm camp. https://milessmithfarm.com/blog/one-rule-for-calves-and-people-that-will-surprise-you

"Anything you can do, we can do better." Stephanie Hurd said that from the seat of a cart hitched to a Scottish Highland steer. She wasn't bragging. She was just right. Stephanie is an Assistive Technology and Activities Specialist with Future In Sight, whose mission is to advance the independence of people who are blind or visually impaired. https://milessmithfarm.com/blog/seeing-the-barnyard-in-a-new-way

Can a Cow Teach You How to Find Peace? People come out to my farm carrying a lot. Grief. Worry. A week they can't put down.

Then they put their hands on a two-thousand-pound animal who wants absolutely nothing from them, and something lets go.

This is a short piece from a longer talk about why that works — and why the present moment is the only place any of us have ever felt better. Liked this? Watch the full talk here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOQurfhtqiI

Guests love watching my Scottish Highlands graze outside the farmhouse windows — those shaggy coats, those sweeping horns, that unhurried amble. And they always want to know more: What do they eat? How do they handle a New Hampshire winter? What makes a cow's life a good one? My Seven Module Cow Coaching Course answers all of it. You'll learn how cattle see the world, what they need to thrive, and why a well-cared-for cow is a happy, cooperative one. https://cow-coaching-school-at-miles-smith-farm.teachable.com/p/cow-coaching
