"What type of cow is that?" asked Jane, a visitor to Miles Smith Farm, pointing to Merry. When I told her Merry was a dairy calf, Jane's follow-up stopped me cold: "When will you start milking her?"
Where to begin? For starters, Merry is a he—a steer. Jane's question, though, revealed a common and charming misconception: Cows simply fill up with milk on their own, like vending machines restocked overnight.

After 24 years raising cattle, you'd think I'd be unaffected by Finn, the friendly steer who walks over looking for scratches, or when Owen B, a Scottish Highland steer, regards me with those big eyes.

This Memorial Day, those simple pleasures feel like something to hold close. A peaceful morning, a job we love, animals who trust us—none of it comes free. It was bought by people who never came home to mornings like ours. We owe them a quiet kind of gratitude.

This weekend, we remember those whose sacrifice makes that good fortune possible.

“Do you remember which cow charged me?” I asked husband Bruce.

“It was a red one,” he said.

When we started raising cattle, keeping track of individuals in our 50-head herd was essential. So we assigned numbers and put ear tags on each bovine. The tags didn’t bother the animals and made identification easy. Problem solved—almost. https://milessmithfarm.com/blog/when-you-love-cows-of-course-you-name-them

Several years ago, our cattle were grazing in a leased pasture in Gilmanton when the farm owner decided to replace the barn roof.
The old shingles and nails came off the roof and landed in the pasture. He cleaned up afterward, but a stray nail or two may have slipped through.
Stepping on a nail is bad, but the bigger worry is that a curious cow might eat one. Cattle aren’t picky chewers. They sweep up grass like a vacuum cleaner, and whatever’s mixed in goes down the hatch. The result is something called “hardware disease,” and it’s exactly as unpleasant as it sounds. A nail or wire piercing one of the cow’s four stomach chambers can cause infection or worse. https://milessmithfarm.com/blog/how-to-save-a-cow-s-life-with-a-magnet

After a long, snowy winter, it’s time to do a happy dance and welcome warmer days. If you don’t know how to dance, the cattle can show you the bovine style. Every spring, when I let the cows onto a new pasture, they kick up their heels, bounce into the air, and dash for the best patch of grass. https://milessmithfarm.com/blog/spring-cow-dancing

The Cow Spa gets our critters ready for the warm weather. https://soulecoaching.as.me/CowSpa Scottish Highland and Belted Galloway cattle grow thick, rich coats of hair to protect them from frigid winter weather. The lanolin in their hair repels water and snow better than an L.L. Bean slicker. Unlike a parka, the cattle can't remove their wooly coats when the weather warms up. That's when electric clippers come into play.
The clippers' vibration must be soothing because once the clipping begins, each cow lowers its head, closes its eyes, and falls into a trance, lulled into submission as we buzz away their winter covering. If you'd like to try clipping, schedule a time here: https://soulecoaching.as.me/CowSpa
