❓ Question of the Week: What type of MULCH should I use for garlic?
With so many options out there, the best mulch is usually the one that's readily available to you! Here are some of our recommendations 👇
✅ STRAW: Our go-to! Just be mindful of your source—some straw can introduce w**d seeds. also, make sure it is not treated with pesticides, as treated straw can damage or even kill your garlic.
✅ CHOPPED LEAVES: A great option as long as they're untreated. Avoid leaves from Black Walnut trees, which produce juglone—a natural toxin that can stunt garlic and other plants.
✅ GRASS CLIPPINGS: Use with caution! If your lawn is treated with "w**d & feed," skip this option. Herbicide residues can transfer to your garlic. Also remember that grass clippings release nitrogen as they break down, so factor that into your fertilizer plan.
✅ PINE NEEDLES: This one sparks debate! Some gardeners worry about acidity while others see little impact. We haven't tested pine needles ourselves, but they can be low-cost, w**d free option if you have pine trees nearby.
✅ WOOD CHIPS: Make sure they're untreated. Keep in mind that cedar chips decompose slowly, and their natural oils can affect sensitive plants (and even repel beneficial insects).
✅ MUSHROOM COMPOST: Rich in organic matter and nutrients that garlic loves! The downside? It's usually more expensive that other mulching options.
