❤️ Chesnok Red ❤️

At Keene Garlic, this is one of our favorite (and most popular) hardneck garlic varieties. Chesnok Red is incredibly versatile, offering a wonderful flavor profile whether pickled, roasted, raw, or sautéed. When roasted or sautéed, it delivers a smooth, caramelized garlic flavor that is pleasantly mild and not overpowering.

Planting one pound of this garlic can yield up to ten pounds at harvest, making it highly productive. Its beautiful wrapper coloring also catches the eye. ✨

This garlic thrives in a wide range of climates, handling the extreme cold of the north and the warm temperatures of the south. It grows exceptionally well in California! 🧄

Garlic season is in full swing here in Madison, WI 🧄🌱

The plants are really taking off—strong, healthy growth with thick leaves and sturdy stems!

Once scapes start to appear in the coming weeks, we'll shift gears—stopping fertilizer, harvesting the scapes, and letting all the energy go into bulb development where it counts.

How is your garlic looking so far—are scapes starting to show yet? 👇

Do you have two garlic plants growing together and are wondering what happened? 🧄

It might seem unusual—you may even swear you only planted one clove! But this can happen when two cloves inside the same garlic wrapper and get planted as one.
Because cloves can be tucked inside the same wrapper, it’s not always obvious at planting time. We tend to see this more often in hardneck garlic—especially rocamboles and porcelains.

At harvest, this usually results in two multi-cloved bulbs growing side by side, often with a flatter side where they were pressed together. We’ll share an update in July when these are harvested so you can see the full result!
No need to worry—these can still be harvested, cured, and enjoyed just like normal garlic! 🙌 They may look a little differently shaped from sharing space, but they’ll still taste great 😋

Did you know elephant garlic scapes don't behave like regular garlic scapes?
Instead of curling, they shoot straight up toward the sky—and that's exactly when you want to pick them! The ideal length for picking Elephant Garlic scapes is 6-12 inches long! 💚

We hope this helps somebody!! ❤️🧄

We love harvesting green garlic in the spring—but sometimes (not often, because we love it that much😋) we end up with more than we can use!

When that happens, we preserve it for later so we can enjoy that fresh spring garlic flavor in the winter! ❄️

Watch as Cindy shares how we dehydrate and freeze our green garlic for when those garlic cravings hit in the off-season.

👉 How do you like to preserve your green garlic?

Not sure when to stop harvesting green garlic? Cindy's got you covered! 🧄✨

We recommend stopping once your garlic starts to form a scape — that's the signal it's shifting energy into creating a full multi-cloved bulb. Let it grow from there, and you'll be rewarded with beautiful bulbs at harvest time! ❤️
