🧄 Yesterday we talked about growing garlic in raised beds, but we know a lot of growers love metal raised beds. Here are a few reasons we recommend choosing wood over metal for garlic whenever possible!

While metal raised beds work great for many garden crops, garlic has unique needs. Since it's planted in the fall and spends the entire winter in the ground, it relies on the surrounding soil for insulation. Metal beds tend to sit higher above the ground and can expose garlic to greater temperatures fluctuations, increasing risk of winter freeze-out.

✅ For better overwintering success:
- Choose wooden raised beds when possible
- Keep beds lower to the ground
- Plant garlic toward the center of the bed for added protection
- Apply a good layer of mulch before winter

A little extra protection during the cold months can make a big difference in the size and quality of your harvest next summer! 🌱🧄

❓ Question of the Week: Noticing mold on your garlic skins and wondering what’s going on?

Don’t worry—this is very common. Surface molds like Aspergillus (shown in photo) most often show up when there isn’t quite enough airflow during curing—but they can appear even when conditions are good. Over the years, we’ve noticed it tends to happen more often in wetter seasons.

✨ The good news: this type of mold is purely cosmetic. Just peel back those outer layers, and as long as the bulb underneath looks clean, it’s safe to eat and plant.

But…we all prefer beautiful, mold-free bulbs. So how can we help prevent this? 👇

▪️ Cornell Cooperative Extension found a lower incidence of Aspergillus when garlic was cured in high tunnels (hoop houses) vs. open-air structures.
▪️ They also found a slightly higher incidence in garlic that was washed with water before curing.
▪️ And according to The University of California Integrated Pest Management: “Moisture must be present on the bulb for 6–12 hours for the disease to develop. This can occur if bulbs are damp when stored, or when condensation builds up as bulbs go into or come out of storage.”

We know that’s a lot of info—but we hope it helps someone out there! If you’ve experienced this in your own garlic, share your tips in the comments so we can all learn from each other. 🫶

Thinking about growing garlic in raised beds? Here are some tips to set yourself up for success! 🧄

1️⃣ Plant in the Center
The edges and corners of raised beds are more exposed to freezing winter winds and temperature fluctuations. Keep your garlic cozy by planting it right in the middle of the bed where the soil stays warmer.

2️⃣ Don't Skip the Mulch
A nice thick layer of mulch (like straw) is key! It acts as a blanket, protecting the bulbs from extreme cold and helping to regulate soil moisture. If you are able to pack mulch around the sides of the bed, that helps even more!

3️⃣Choose the Right Variety
Make sure you are planting a garlic variety that is well-suited to your specific region's climate. Here in Wisconsin we love planting hardneck garlic like German Extra Hardy, Chesnok Red, and Music!

Notice the difference in the stalks? Thicker stalks means bigger, healthier garlic bulbs come harvest time! ❤️

Korean Red is a standout Purple Stripe Hardneck garlic that has a zingy, citrusy flavor. It's stunning purple-streaked wrappers hold 9-12 medium to large cloves per bulb, and it grows beautifully in both northern and southern climates.

Make Bruschetta with all of your homegrown veggies!

🍅 fresh tomatoes
🧄 a couple cloves of homegrown garlic
🌱 6 fresh basil leaves
🧅 1/8 cup red onion
🧀 fresh mozzarella, cut into small chunks (optional)
🧀 parmesan cheese
🥖 french bread, thinly sliced
🫒 1/2 T olive oil, plus more for bread
✨ 1/4 tsp salt, 1/8 tsp pepper, 1 tsp balsamic vinegar

1) Dice tomatoes, squeezing out most of the seeds. Mince onion and garlic. Slice/chop basil. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and stir to combine.
2) Slice the bread into think slices (roughly 1/2" thick). Brush one side with olive oil and toast at 450F for 2-3 minutes. Check it sooner if your oven runs hot. Remove bread from oven and let it cool for a couple minutes.
3) Add tomato mix to the bread. Add mozzarella if using and grate some parmesan over the top. Serve immediately.

Wednesday Why: Why did my porcelain bulbs have 8-10 cloves this year, instead of 4-6?🧄

The weather is often the culprit! When garlic experiences weather-related stress, it can respond by producing more cloves than usual. Don't worry though, you'll still have those nice jumbo cloves you love, plus a few extra for planting!

Did you notice extra cloves in your porcelain bulbs this year?👇🌱
