Vegetable farming is more complicated than many people realize.
We finally managed to put some sweet corn seed into the ground yesterday. Two and a half weeks late, so we skipped planting 1 altogether and started with planting 2 this year. That makes us only 10 days behind our arbitrary schedule. If we get the predicted 80's the next few days, quicker germination might shave another three days off that, making us only a week behind where we wanted to be - which is about normal for us.
Had we planted #1 planting last week, most likely it would have failed altogether. But, if we were lucky, cold, wet soil would have delayed germination instead of rotting the seed. Couple that with the predicted weather, and both plantings could have emerged together, and we'd have too much corn ready all at once, a good half of it being wasted. We can only sell so much, and corn that stays in the field is not profitable.
The final result is that the corn that grows will probably get ready the same time it would have anyway, and we still have the seed from planting 1 to save for 2027.

An article in the "Extra" section of the online version of today's Post-Standard newspaper asked why Americans are obese. The author disputed what is commonly accepted as the main reason, namely that junk food is cheaper than healthier fruits and vegetables.
The article cited studies that eliminated cost from the foods that people selected, and concluded that many Americans don't eat vegetables simply because they don't like them.
Obviously, the subjects of those studies couldn't have tasted any Pompey-grown produce, or they'd have a completely different opinion...

After the last two days of nice weather, soil conditions are finally at a point where we could start planting sweet corn. BUT...
Starting this afternoon and continuing through Wednesday night, rain is predicted. Somewhere around two inches of it for our area. And, it's supposed to turn colder again, meaning that it will be a cold rain that will cool the soil temperature.
Thursday and Friday are supposed to be sunny, but still cold for this time of year. That means it'll take that long just to dry out. And with patchy frost predicted for Thursday night, it's just not going to warm up enough for sweet corn to germinate at all reliably. Field corn might work, but today's sweet corn varieties are more sensitive to cold soils.
Then it starts all over again, with a chance of rain or rain likely for the next few days. And the National Weather Service's 8-14 day outlook shows continued chilly and damp conditions through May 18.
So much for our plans for this year. Once again we have to make things up as we go along.

A few days ago we were thinking that the fields were getting to be just about thawed out enough to start plowing, but we held off.
Good thing we did. We're being told we had something like two inches of rain in the last 24 hours, and the forecast is for more almost every day this week.
Had we done any plowing, not only would that ground have been more subject to erosion, but it would have become so saturated that there would have been compaction from the sheer weight of the wet soil, and it could easily have taken a month before we could work it again. The crop would never be as good as it could have been.
There have been years when we could start Spring's Work in March, but 2026 isn't one of them.
