According to a study published in the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, low doses of quercetin — a flavonoid naturally found in foods like onions, apples, berries, and tea — were able to slow the growth of aggressive HER2-positive breast cancer cells (SK-Br3 and MDA-MB-453). Researchers used physiologically relevant doses around 5–10 μM, levels considered achievable in the bloodstream through regular intake rather than extremely high laboratory-only doses. Instead of directly killing the cancer cells, quercetin pushed them into a cellular “stop mode” known as G1 cell cycle arrest, preventing the cells from continuing to replicate and spread.

The study found that quercetin increased the protective protein p21, reduced phosphorylation of the retinoblastoma protein (pRb), and suppressed key division-driving proteins like cyclin B1 and CDK1 — all of which are heavily involved in uncontrolled tumor growth. Interestingly, the low-dose quercetin had little effect on normal breast cells (MCF-10A), suggesting a more selective effect toward rapidly dividing cancer cells. Researchers also observed mild DNA stress and activation of the Chk2 pathway, which further contributed to shutting down the cancer cells’ ability to progress through the cell cycle.

What happens at 32 grams per day?

In a dose–response crossover trial, participants took 4, 8, 16, or 32 g/day of activated charcoal for three-week intervals. At the highest dose, LDL cholesterol fell by up to 41%.

But here’s the interesting part: as LDL dropped, markers of cholesterol synthesis increased. In other words, the liver was making more cholesterol — even while circulating LDL was falling.

A similar study using 24 g/day showed the same pattern. Total cholesterol fell significantly, while cholesterol synthesis markers surged. Meanwhile, markers of cholesterol absorption didn’t change — suggesting dietary cholesterol wasn’t the primary driver.

The mechanism points to bile acids. Activated charcoal binds bile acids in the gut, interrupting their normal recycling. When bile acids are lost instead of reabsorbed, the liver must produce more — pulling cholesterol out of circulation to do it.

At higher doses like 32 g/day, LDL reduction appears to stem from increased cholesterol diversion into bile acid production, not suppressed synthesis.

Everything we thought about lymph nodes and cancer treatment was wrong. For decades, surgeons removed lymph nodes near tumors to stop cancer from spreading. But new research reveals these small, bean-shaped organs do more than filter lymph fluid. They actively train and multiply stem-like T cells, the cancer-fighting white blood cells. When lymph nodes are removed, this vital supply line is disrupted, weakening the body's response to treatments like checkpoint inhibitors or CAR T cell therapy. Instead of passive hosts, lymph nodes are command centers where dendritic cells present danger signals and nurture T cells into effective fighters. Protecting lymph nodes during treatment could enhance patient responses and improve long-term outcomes by preserving the body's natural ability to generate potent anti-cancer T cells.
