Every farmer or rancher is operating with different limitations. For the Stranberg family, a big limitation in their home state of Minnesota is pasture. So, two years ago, they built a confinement barn so they had space to feed cattle when they couldn’t be on pasture.

"Feed conversion today is the most valuable trait in the feedlot. It’s worth about $50/head on a beef calf for every one-tenth of feed conversion.”

What does this mean in practice? “If you go from a 6 to a 5.9, so you take less feed per pound of gain, you save $50 on a calf in a feedlot. That’s a huge number. It’s too big to ignore. And, of course, it’s heritable.”
