Where Do Chicken Eggs Come From?

Before the nest box. Before the chicken coop. Before the chicken’s butt.

That egg starts forming inside the hen, where tiny pieces of tissue called follicles are constantly developing into yolks.

One by one, a yolk is released and travels through the oviduct, picking up the egg white, membranes, and finally the shell along the way.

So that beautiful non-GMO pasture raised egg you crack into your skillet is the end result of an incredible little process happening inside an Apollo Acres chicken every single day!

Can you see the difference between the recently grazed pasture in front and the fresh tall grass that the ruminants have just been moved to in the back?

We don't allow the ruminants (sheep & cows) to have free access to the entire field at once. We concentrate their eating, stomping, and pooping into small paddocks for a few days at a time before they get moved to the next spot. This is called rotational raising and has incredible benefits for the animals, soil, and even people who enjoy the meat from these animals.

Rotatipnal grazing helps:
-Build healthier soil
-Encourage stronger pasture growth
-Improve water retention
-Reduce overgrazing
-Support a healthier farm ecosystem

Healthy soil → healthy pasture → healthy animals

...become a farmer.

The farm requires those skilled (or willing to learn the skills) in leadership. Those with a sense of direction, a plan, a way to guide the flock and the rest of the animals.

But farmers can't make animals follow. They can't force animals to do what animals just don't want to do. Farming requires the leader to work with the team, convince the animal that what the farmer knows is best for the greater good.

And when that just doesn't work, the leader needs to understand humility and failure and be willing to accept that they just don't know what's best.

The days when it works out well...those are the best days on the farm. When it doesn't work out well...those tend to be the most memorable. Truth is, leaders need them both!

Rotating cows and sheep on new pasture every few days ensures they get fresh palatable grass, a clean field free of recent droppings, and decreases parasite and fly presence.

They've gotten so used to this routine that they run up and down the fence baaing and mooing at us excitedly til they get to their fresh paddock.

We've had our fair share of struggles this year on the farm, but rotating the ruminants around the field and utilizing their natural tendencies to keep this 20+ acre field mowed has been one of our biggest wins!
