Creekview Ridge Farm

Creekview Ridge Farm Hello lovers of fresh, nutrient-dense, locally grown fruits and vegetables and local farmers! Thanks for looking! Kip Gardner, Owner, Creekview Ridge Farm

Creekview Ridge Farm is in its sixth year of production in the beautiful hills just outside of Minerva, Ohio, 35 minutes east of Downtown Canton. We currently run a 20 member CSA and also sell through the Stark Fresh Mobile Farmer's Market (beginning July 11, 2017, check out their page for details). We keep a self-service refrigerator stocked with fresh, organic-feed, free range eggs and

other seasonal goodies at 426 Schneider St. SE in North Canton (look for the beige refrigerator by the garage). For those not familiar with the CSA concept, here is a quick lowdown. CSA stands for "community supported agriculture" and basically removes the grocery store middle man from the picture. You buy a "share" for a certain length of time (typically the summer and/or fall season), and we deliver a week's worth of fresh vegetables in season to a drop off in North Canton every week. It's a great way to connect the way you eat to a more sustainable lifestyle, while helping support those who care about the quality and ecological sustainability of the way they grow food. If you are interested in more information about the CSA shoot us a message! Or if you are in the area and want to come check things out, we'd love to see you; it's always a good idea to call ahead if you do! 330-265-5992.

Happy Spring, fresh produce lovers! I hope everyone is enjoying the arrival of Spring weather! It was a rough winter, for a number of reasons, including a cancer diagnosis that has kept me wrapped up with treatments (that are working!) for most of the past 3 months.

In spite of that, we are making plans for this year's growing season, and most of the seeds I need for this year's CSA were delivered a couple weeks ago. I'm in the last stages of preparing the high tunnel for planting, and I'll be starting seedlings over the next couple of weeks.

I will also have another grower working on the farm this year! Noah Salem apprenticed with me last year, and grew and sold his own crops, he is returning this year and has ambitious plans, so I expect some of whatever he decides to grow will be part of the CSA shares as well.

This year, I will be running the CSA the same way as the past few years - on a week-to-week basis rather than requiring subscribers to sign up and pay for the entire season. I'm not sure when we'll actually start deliveries, there's a lot to do yet, but I am hopeful that it will be earlier than the past couple years. If you are interested in being on the weekly notification list, please email me at [email protected]. Once it's time to start deliveries, i'll start sending out the usual weekly share reservation notices.

I am still planning on making North Canton my primary delivery area, but with the closing of Little Sparrow Bookstore, the droppoff location for the past couple years, I am lookoing for a new, easily accessible location for people to come and pick up their shares.

I'm very much looking forward to being your farmer again this year and look forward to hearing from you!

Kip Gardner, Creekview Ridge Farm.

Good Morning!

It has been a long time since I've posted here on the farm page, partly because there's less to talk about during the winter months, and partly because I was almost continuously sick with whatever infections were going around this winter from January until just a couple weeks ago. Those infectious illnesses also caused my kidneys to start shutting down, so i had a lot to deal with!

Anyway, things are better now and I am moving along with preparations for this year's growing season and CSA!

Yes, I will be running the CSA again this year! As I have done for the past 5 years, I am not requiring prepaid subscriptions, you will be able to participate week-to-week as you choose and only pay for those weeks you want a share. I find this is more flexible for both myself and my customers, and has worked well.

If you want to be part of this year's CSA, please message me with an EMAIL address, and I will add you to my weekly notification list (past-year customers are already on the list). As in past years weekly payments can be by cash, check or PayPal.

As in the past, delivery will be in North Canton, to a central pickup point that should be convenient for my Canton and North canton customers.

Each week, once the CSA starts, I will send out an email message detailing what's available each week, and what the share price will be (typically $40 this year for two full grocery bags of produce, less for smaller shares). You will then have the option to reserve a share until they are all sold.

Something new at the farm this year is that I am making garden plots available for anyone who wants to grow their own produce. I have space for 6-8 people. I have a variety of resources that would help you get started. Not only do I hope this will allow people to feel more self-sufficient, but I am also looking for people who might wish to partner in the farm in the future. I am beginning to plan for (semi) retirement, and intend to convert the farm to a multi-owner co-operative. This seems to me to be the best way to preserve what I've started here for future generations, and having plots available this year is one way to start making connections for that future shift.

If either a garden plot this year, or something more permanent in the future, interests you, please message me soon, it's time to start gardening!

There is a more detailed description of what I'm hoping to do this summer on the OEFFA FarmLink site, I'll post the web link in another post soon.

That's all for now, i hope everyone is enjoying the change of Season, and looking forward to the summer growing season!

Thanks! Kip Gardner, Creekview Ridge

Anticipation is building in Vermont for the upcoming total solar eclipse — when the moon will completely block the sun and put much of Vermont in shadow for several minutes. East Barnard resident Floyd Van Alstyne, who is 104, remembers the last time it happened in Vermont in 1932.

THE HILLS ARE ALIVE !!!

With the sound of h***y amphibians.

It's the first warmish night of the year, and so, the first full amphibian o**y of the season is underway tonight in the creek and ponds. Spring Peepers and some other tree frog, I think, are in full song all over the farm, actually, probably up and down the whole creek valley. It's a literal surround-sound experience.

The males, their imaginations fueled by longer days and hormones, and numbering in their thousands, are each singing their hearts out in hopes of enticing a female to shed her eggs, just for him.

How freakin' romantic is that? And they say life in the country is quiet and boring.

Itachi Cucumbers. These are starting to come ripe and I will have some in this week's CSA Share. These are my favorite cukes by far. The flavor is mild but distinct. The seeds are small and tender, and the skin is tender too, so they can be eaten whole without peeling or seeding. They have none of the bitterness that darker-green cukes often have. They are also my most expensive cuke to grow - 30 seeds cost $14!

Reservations for this week's share should be open tomorrow, I'll post the rest of what will be in the share then.

I had one of these in a salad for dinner tonight, delicious!

Good evening!

This week’s CSA reservations are now open, until 10am Wednesday morning.

Things are coming along well, I picked a couple small cucumbers for dinner tonight, I hope to have some for the shares next week. The tomato plants are loaded with green tomatoes, so I hope some of those will ripen in the next week or two!

Some of you may not be familiar with what a ‘share’ looks like, so I’ve included a picture this week (2 bags = 1 share). According to customers who have bought from other local CSA’s, I provide one of the best Shares in terms of price and value in the Canton area.

Also, just as a reminder, I grow all my produce to USDA organic standards, that means I use no disallowed toxic chemicals on my crops, and my soils are managed to provide you with produce that is more flavorful and nutritious than the conventionally-grown you get at the supermarket.

Everything is picked fresh the day it’s delivered, and all my crops are immediately washed after picking in a constant-flow cold water bath to clean them and stop the action of the natural enzymes in the produce that degrade flavor. You simply can’t get fresher produce!

So, this week, the share will include:

Leaf Lettuce, very sweet & tender!
Onions
Basil
Swiss chard
Kale
Collards
Kohlrabi
Mint

The first 4 shares reserved will also include a large Zucchini!

$20 per share, 10 shares available again this week, payable by PayPal ([email protected]), cash or check.

E-mail me at [email protected] to reserve your share!

Delivery per usual at 426 Schneider St. SE, North Canton, 4:30 - 6:30pm Wednesday.

Thank you!

Good Evening!

Here's this week's CSA announcement!

This week I will once again have 10 shares available for $20 each. We are getting closer to having tomatoes and cucumbers, but still a few weeks off. The plants are looking good!

So this week the share will be mostly ‘green stuff’:

Collards
Red Russian Kale
Swiss Chard
‘Candy’ onions
Kohlrabi
Basil
Mint

Maybe a little lettuce, and I am keeping a close eye on the woods. With all the rain we had this weekend we might get Chanterelle mushrooms coming up, but I don’t know yet. I’ll be checking both tomorrow and Wednesday morning.

And usual, pickup will be 4:30 - 6:30 pm on Wednesday at 426 Schneider St. SE in North Canton

Also, payment as usual - cash or check at pickup or by PayPal to:

[email protected]
