See that back corner of the basin? The water there barely moves. 👀

Every cooling tower has dead zones. Corners, the edges under the fill, the far side of the basin away from the suction. Flow slows down, and whatever the tower scrubbed out of the air settles right there.

That sludge isn’t just ugly. 🧪
Biocide and inhibitor have to reach the metal to work, and they can’t push through a layer of muck. Underneath it, biofilm grows undisturbed and corrosion gets a head start.

It’s also exactly the kind of warm, slow, nutrient-rich spot Legionella looks for. ⚠️

The fix isn’t more chemical. It’s getting water moving where it’s stalled, cleaning the basin on a schedule, and having someone actually look in the corners on every visit.

That orange streak isn't dirt. 🟠

Galvanized towers protect themselves by sacrificing the zinc layer. It corrodes so the steel underneath doesn't. Right up until it's gone. Then every drop running down that panel is working on bare metal, and the clock speeds up.

Here's why right now matters:
⚙️ Towers are coming off peak load. Flow drops, water sits warmer and longer, and oxygen has all the time in the world.

🧪 pH drift that got diluted out under full load isn't getting diluted out anymore.

💧 A tower that goes into layup wet, untreated and unwatched can lose more metal over the winter than it did all summer.

Layup isn't “close the valve and walk away.” It's a decision — wet or dry — and then a plan that matches it. Circulation, biocide, inhibitor residual, and somebody actually checking.

Do the walk now, while the tower is still running and still cheap to fix. Panels, fill, basin, sump, louvers. Photograph what you find. Compare it in April.

The tower that surprises you in the spring almost always left a note in the fall.

⛳️ Big thanks to BOMA St. Louis for putting on another great tournament, and to everyone who's stopped to talk shop between shots.
We're at hole 8 until the last group clears.

We packed a tent this morning. The tent never left the truck. 🌬️

Turns out "breezy" on a St. Louis forecast reads a little differently once you're standing on an open fairway holding a pop-up canopy.

So — two flags, a table, a cooler, and a couple of chairs. Hole 8. Still the best seat on the course, and we've had a steady stream of people pulling up all day.
