Day 6/10: Peony Secret - The Secret to Transplanting Your Peonies 🌱

Peonies do not like being moved! But there are reasons to why you might have to dig them out. Here is how to do it:

1. Dig in the Fall (after your first frost). Why? Because the plant is going dormant, which causes way less shock to the roots. Spring is your second choice if you have to.

2. Plant them fast: Once you dig them up, get them back into the ground ASAP. Letting those roots dry out is a big no-no.

3. Think long-term: Choose a location with great drainage and plenty of sunlight, and plant only 1-2 inches below soil surface. Your goal is to plant them once and never dig again (unless you want to split them up later).

NOTE: I did not dig up this plant as it was mid-May. In October, I will be digging. This one was planted under a large tree and it's not getting enough sunlight. In the fall, you can expect the leaves to turn brown and I'll be following these steps.

The great debate: pee-uh-nee or pee-oh-nee?

I’m team both because my brain switches depending on the situation πŸ˜…

As a cut-flower peony farmer, we don’t leave our peonies out in the field to bloom.

As much as I want flowers for beautiful photos, we can't do that. 90% to 95% of our peonies are harvested at the 'closed bud' stage. This is how we make sure they last in your vase at home.

While some peony farms grow specifically for agritourism, we focus on cut stems.
