Started as a Senate approved observance in 2007, National Pollinator Week is celebrated worldwide in support of pollinator health.

Even though they aren't the only ones doing the heavy lifting, bees are the undisputed champions of the pollinator world. New York State has over 400 species of native wild bees, as well as managed honey bees. Bees are NY’s most efficient pollinators because they collect and transport pollen. Some key native groups to remember are the bumble bees, sweat bees, mason bees, and leafcutter bees.

Something really neat that happened locally this year concerning bees...the discovery that Ithaca cemetery is home to one of the largest and oldest recorded aggregations of ground nesting bees in the world, with an estimated 5.5 million individual bees. That’s the equivalent of more than 200 honeybee hives in a 1.5-acre plot of land, and more than three times the population of Manhattan!
