Happy Summer Solstice! ☀️

The longest day of the year is here!

The sun stands at the peak of its power today, flooding the earth with light, vitality, and magic. 🌿🔥 This is a season of abundance, confidence, and stepping fully into your own radiance. This is a potent time for manifestation and deep magic.

🌻 A few ways to celebrate Litha:

🕯️ Light a candle at sunrise or sunset and speak your intentions aloud
🌿 Make a solstice herb bundle with lavender, rosemary, or sunflower and hang it for abundance and protection
💎 Charge your crystals in the sunlight and set an intention as you place them
🌸 Build a solstice altar with flowers and candles in solar colors, then sit with it and let yourself dream
🧴 Take a ritual bath with lavender, rosemary, and sea salt, and visualize anything that no longer serves you washing away

Hi, I'm Mary. ✨ A lot of new faces have shown up here this week, and I wanted to take a minute to actually introduce myself.

My family moved to Mount Airy in 2017 and we just fell in love with this town. I worked in two different shops downtown and did craft show after craft show on Market Street.

After building this business doing live sales from my laundry room, I opened my own shop in Mount Airy in 2021. I had consignors, artists, and local businesses right there in my shop alongside my own work. I also created Wander Fest, a craft show that grew over four years to 75 vendors, all local artists and small businesses getting a chance to be seen and supported.

After five wonderful years running the shop in Mount Airy, we transitioned to online only. But my family and I are still in Mount Airy all the time, showing up for the people who make this town what it is. I still host classes and gatherings here too.

So no, I'm not against progress or a new parking lot. I just believe people who love this town deserve to be heard, not dismissed. That's the only reason I spoke up, and clearly I wasn't the only one who felt that way.

Downtown Mount Airy just put in a new parking lot and cut down every single tree that was there. Beautiful, established trees that had been there for years. Gone. For a parking lot.

And when people expressed how upset they were about it, the response was a video mocking them for caring. Not a conversation. Not an acknowledgment. A video making fun of the people who live here.

This is the disconnect. Downtown development in small towns like ours almost never gets built for the people who actually live here. It gets built for tourists, for investors, for people passing through. The aesthetics get polished up, the prices go up, and somehow the actual locals end up feeling like strangers in their own town.

Those trees were not just trees. They were part of what made that space feel like it belonged to us. And the fact that the response to grief over losing them was mockery tells you everything you need to know about who they think this town is for.

We are not the tourists. We are not the investors. We are the people who live here, shop here, raise our kids here, and build things here because we actually care about this place.

You want locals to support downtown? Start acting like locals matter. It really is that simple.
