😓 Sleep is one of the 3 foundational pillars of our overall health, along with diet and physical activity

Personally, I don't usually need a nap.Ā  Professionally, I don't believe they are necessary for a healthy person

Napping, especially when properly timed, can be beneficial.Ā  It can provide a quick, effective boost to cognitive performance, mood, and alertness when done properly. However, long or poorly timed naps can lead to grogginess and interfere with nighttime sleep

A nap taken 12 hours from the midpoint of your sleep cycle is worth twice the amount of night time sleep.Ā  For example, if you sleep from 10 - 6, 2 am is the midpoint of your sleep cycle.Ā  Thus, a 30 minute nap at 2 pm is worth an hour of nighttimeĀ  regenerative sleep

If you have trouble getting to sleep

If you wake up 3 - 5 hours into your sleepĀ  cycle

MELATONIN ~ Replacement or regenerationn?
What would you rather do take a melatonin supplement for the rest of your life or identify and correct the underlying reason why

Never stop asking WHY.Ā  Why do you need a sleep aid?Ā  Why aren't you sleeping sound without it?Ā  There's usually a fixable reason.Ā  If you'd like help improving your sleep quality, link in Profile to the CONTACT page on my website to request brochure & session schedule.

šŸ‡Ā  Resveratrol, a grape skin extract, Ā reduces blood stickiness by inhibiting platelets from clumping together and, improves blood flow by tonifying the smooth muscle lining of blood vessels.Ā Ā  Bonus: mimics calorie restriction, one of the best documented strategies for longevity and, reduces blood sugar and insulin resistance.Ā  It works; Just ask the French

šŸ”„ Since chronic inflammation of the vascular system is at the root of most all serious heart disease, anti-oxidant anti-inflam-matories are some of the best antidotes.Ā Ā Below is a brief survey ofĀ  such nutritional support

🫘  Nattokinase is a fermented soybean supplement with potentĀ  enzymatic blood thinning (anti-coagulant/fibrinolytic) activity. It’s newer cousin, Lumbrokinase, is derived form earthworms

šŸ”† Co-enzyme Q10 (Ubiquinone) is one of the more well established cardiovascular oxygenating and heart energizing nutrients.Ā  It is involved at the intimate level of the Krebs ATP cellular energy production cycle.Ā  Its newest cousin, Ubiquinol, is thought to be twice as potent as Ubiquinone, both for assimilation and utilization at the functional intra-cellular level

šŸ…±ļø Beta Glucans help the heart directly, by reducing cholesterol with its fiber like properties and indirectly, by stabilizing blood sugar levels, thus helping to manage metabolic syndrome.Ā Ā Ā Ā  Added bonus: immune support and anti cancer properties

šŸŠĀ  Grapefruit Fiber has been shown to have significant cholesterol lowering properties. This is the first ingredient in my CARDIO FIBER

All of the best, even individually tailored, nutrition will do little good without adequate physical activity to circulate nutrients and deliver them to target tissues -- that is, to take nutrition to your heart

FOOD ~ FIRST IN THE MOUTH, THEN THE STOMACH, AND FINALLY THE WAY TO YOUR HEART

While veggies shine as anti-cancer foods, fruits take the cardiovascular cake.Ā  All of the foods below contain potent anti-oxidant anti-inflammatory, and other heart healthy, properties

Pomegranate
Red Grapes, juice, wine
Melon
Grapefruit juice and fiber contain compoundsĀ  that not only increase circulation and decrease cholesterol, but also increase the effect of many medications, so that less is more.Ā  Mention this to your prescribing doctor(s)

Coconut, especially the oil, rich in MCT

Fatty Fish Salmon, Mackeral, Sardines, Tuna

Lecithin is a gentle but potent fat emulsifier/dissolver, naturally abundant in soybeans and egg yolk.

Fresh EggsĀ  The bad cholesterol rap originated from early flawed studies using rancid/oxidized cholesterol. Rancidity and oxidation are the primary disease culprits,Ā  not the cholesterol.Ā  Egg yolk is rich in the highest qualtity lecithin (see above)

Vegetables of every colorĀ  - lots of them.Ā  The latest recommendation is 9 servings/day, no longer 5.Ā  Ten not excessive.Ā  Neither is 20!Ā  My number one dietary recommendation to patients is ā€œeat more vegetables"

ā— Read Parts 1 (MInerals) & 2 (Fish Oil) on my Profile page.

🌿 Hawthorne is an outstanding heart herb, perhaps one of the best on the planet.  It is a tonic in the truest sense, not fast acting but, over time, through its cardio specific flavonoid antioxidants, strengthens and fortifies the entire cardiovascular system against even the worst forms of heart disease, including strokes and heart attacks (cardiac arrest).  While it is helpful and supportive for everything from high cholesterol and blood pressure to angina and congestive heart failure, it is specifically most effective for normalizing an irregular heart beat, including various arrhythmias.   The proper portion of the Hawthorne tree that is used is vital for good results.  While the berry is the most commonly available form, it is a blend of the flower, leaf and berry that has proven most medicinal

🌿 Garlic & cayenne should not go without mention.Ā  Volumes have been published on their versatile cardio specific benefits.Ā  Some heart health formulas combine the above three herbs together for hypertension and other heart conditions.Ā  In the food form, cooked garlic is more advantageous for the cir culatory system than it is raw.Ā  Whereas raw garlic is superior for anti-infective immune support.Ā  Herbal dosing guidelines are important for therapeutic effectiveness and should be determined by a competent health professional for one’s individual need

🌿 Willow Bark has been referred to as nature’s aspirin by many herbalists.Ā  It is the original food source from which the active ingredient of commercial aspirin, salicylic acid, is derived, generally is without side effects such as stomach lining irritation

Yarrow (flower) has cardiotonic and blood pressure regulating effects.Ā  Like Hawthorne, it is mild acting but often effective.Ā  Bonus: Yarrow also benefits the liver & gall bladder.er

PART 2 - Top nutrition support strategies for cardiovascular health, continued.

If you missed Part 1, be sure to see yesterday's post about mineral nutrition with a focus on magnesium, especially related to heart health and cardiovascular disease & prevention

🐟 Fish Oil
Next to the right multiple vitamin, omega-3 fish oil is perhaps one of the most important heart nutrients.Ā  It not only regulates inflammation and lipoprotein cholesterol, but also platelet stickiness and a host of other cardiovascular functions.Ā

Fish source omega-3 appears to be more cardio specific than flaxseed, primrose, and other sources, but all are helpful for the heart as well as numerous other body systems.Ā

One to two grams is a preventive dose, while two to four grams is needed therapeutically.Ā  Among all its other benefits, a therapeutic dosages has been shown to lower cholesterol 20%

1 gram FISH oil is NOT the same as 1g OMEGA-3. 1g OMEGA-3 is NOT the same as 1g EPA nor 500mg DHA.Ā  For therapeutic dosing the distinction is important. Additionally, DHA is more brain focused while EPA is more cardio circulatory & mood support. Related posts on my functional medicine nutrition page. BTW supplemental oils such as omega-3, a, d, e & k are best utilized in the presence of dietary fat, so be sure to take these with your most fat rich meal.

Look for a type that is purified to remove mercury and cholesterol

šŸ’œ Properly feeding your heart involves head knowledge.Ā  In this comprehensive overview series you'll learn how to determine what's right for your individual cardiovascular system and address any heart disease naturally

FOUNDATIONĀ ESSENTIALS

Ā Many age old foods and supplements are still the foundation upon which heart health is built

Minerals are the building blocks of many enzymes and co-enzymes essential to cardiovascular function.Ā  The electrolyte mineralsĀ potassium and sodium, for instance, work in tandem to carry the electrical impulses that produce (heart) muscle contraction and maintain normal rhythm.Ā

Another mineral marriage isĀ magnesium and calcium.Ā  Magnesium is mentioned first for a reason.Ā  Involved in over 300 different enzyme systems throughout the body, it is outstandingly critical at various levels of heart function.Ā

Magnesium deficiency, when properly tested for, is found in virtually all cases of heart disease, especially arrhythmias such as tachycardia.Ā  By the way, the original, age old, mineral supplement was ashes.Ā  That’s another story for another time.Ā  While green vegetables are a good food source of magnesium, most supplemental forms are notoriously difficult to absorbeven the latest & greatest

I don't recommend blindly supplementing any mineral. If you're using magnesium for sleep, anxiety or cramps, you need to understand this...

ā¤ļø Cholesterol is not the bad guy. Neither are lipoproteins, the carrier molecules that transport cholesterol to its essential locations throughout the body

The primary lipoproteins are HDL and LDL, so-called good and bad cholesterol. The high and low DENSITY refer to the amount of protein. The higher the density, the less cholesterol and the more protein

Turns out, sub-lipoproteins are more meaningful and a better indicator of heart disease risk than are the common lipoproteins

ā¤ļø Apolipoprotein-B
Apo-B contributes to arterial plaque, buildup. Measuring Apo-B levels gives an approximation of the total number of atherogenic particles in your blood. A higher Apo-B translates to increased risk of arterial calcification, heart attack and stroke

ā¤ļø Lipoprotein-a
Lp(a) is structurally similar to LDL cholesterol but features an extra, sticky protein called apo(a). It's stickiness causes three major cardiovascular problems.
High levels significantly increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, and aortic stenosis because the particles easily get trapped in artery walls, cause inflammation, and promote blood clotting

I always encourage my patients who are at risk for heart disease or have other circulatory concerns, including clotting and long covid issues from the Spike protein, to routinely check both of these sublipoproteins

Because of its strong genetic influence, there is controversy over whether or not Lp-a can be lowered from dietary and nutritional interventions. Our genetic makeup does not entirely define us. Genes load the gun, diet & lifestyle pull the trigger

When it comes to lowering Lp-a naturally...

Why its important ~ Lipoproteins vs Sublipoproteuns
LDL tells us relatively little about heart disease risk in real time.Ā  If LDL is bad,Ā  Lpa & ApoB are the worst. They are the more concerning, sticky & inflammatory particles most likely to cause blockage of the blood vessels

But even this alone doesn't tell the whole risk story.Ā  Before you start worrying about a heart attack, see all 8 risk factors in my related comment CHOLESTEROL IN CONTEXT

🄚 There has long been a stubborn myth circulating. The claim is that because eggs are used as a culture medium to grow viruses in the laboratory that they promote the growth of viruses in the human body. My question to anyone who believes this is can you cite credible evidence that eggs in humans, not in a petri dish, promote nasty viruses

The fact that eggs are used in the laboratory as a culture medium tells us nothing about their health impact -- other than the fact that they are one of the most nutrient dense superfoods on the planet

Other common, nutrient rich foods used for this same purpose include yeast extract, milk proteins (casein), meat extracts/beef broth, soy peptones, and plant starches. Are they going to try to tell us not to eat these also?

Of course, if we introduce a virus into an egg, it will likely grow. If we introduce a virus into any of these other foods, it also will grow. And, if we introduce a virus into a well nourished body it likewise can grow. None of this has anything to do with eggs. It's all about the terrain

The germ is nothing, terrain is everything

The truth about eggs
🄚
Eggs are the biologic standard by which amino acid protein efficiency is measured. There is no food on earth that comes close to its amino acid profile and nutrient density. An egg is the seed of the animal kingdom, containing all nutrients needed to produce & nurture an entirely new life

Next time someone tries telling you that eggs are a virus factory, please use the above to set them straight

It might surprise you to learn which type of eggs are the healthiest. It's not free range, it's not cage free, and it's not organic. Read the full post on my Profile page

šŸ’ŠĀ  WE LIVE IN A TAKE-A-PILL CULTURE
People expect results at the speed of aspirin.Ā  20 minutes, and the headache is gone.Ā  Question is, what caused the headache?

The health care fix for obesity, diabetes, autoimmune dz, cancer, long haul and every other chronic condition, is the same as it's always been: diet, lifestyle & metabolic balancing

But it seems people would rather pop a pill -- even a natural one -- than make the hard changes

Nutritional & lifestyle healing, by nature, is relatively slow. But it's so much deeper and so much better

🌟  STOP LOOKING FOR THE NEXT SHINEY OBJECT.  There is no magic bullet

TAKE THE SHINEY OBJECT QUIZ

• Are you jumping from trend to trend?

• Are you spending a lot of money every month just trying these things out?

• Are you popping from one thing to the next without seeing things through?

• Are you stopping protocols too soon

Sometimes the most powerful move isn't about finding a new product, but staying long enough to let the right one work for you

It's about timing and knowing when to stay.
After 40 years of working with patients, I've learned a thing or two about opportune timing

Timing is everything.Ā  Is it time to heal?

I've seen patients that even before finishing our first two consultations, at which point their personal nutrition baseline would be established, they have already tried two or three new products.Ā  How do really know what's doing what?

Health isn't about new & shiney, but rather discerning when the right one is working for you.Ā  Such discernment is tricky, especially when it's being viewed only from one's own subjective perspective

If you'd like personalized care, link in profile to the contact page on my website to request brochures in session schedule via email.Ā  If you don't see it in a day or two, be sure to check your spam folder
