💊  WE LIVE IN A TAKE-A-PILL CULTURE
People expect results at the speed of aspirin.  20 minutes, and the headache is gone.  Question is, what caused the headache?

The health care fix for obesity, diabetes, autoimmune dz, cancer, long haul and every other chronic condition, is the same as it's always been: diet, lifestyle & metabolic balancing

But it seems people would rather pop a pill -- even a natural one -- than make the hard changes

Nutritional & lifestyle healing, by nature, is relatively slow. But it's so much deeper and so much better

🌟  STOP LOOKING FOR THE NEXT SHINEY OBJECT.  There is no magic bullet

TAKE THE SHINEY OBJECT QUIZ

• Are you jumping from trend to trend?

• Are you spending a lot of money every month just trying these things out?

• Are you popping from one thing to the next without seeing things through?

• Are you stopping protocols too soon

Sometimes the most powerful move isn't about finding a new product, but staying long enough to let the right one work for you

It's about timing and knowing when to stay.
After 40 years of working with patients, I've learned a thing or two about opportune timing

Timing is everything.  Is it time to heal?

I've seen patients that even before finishing our first two consultations, at which point their personal nutrition baseline would be established, they have already tried two or three new products.  How do really know what's doing what?

Health isn't about new & shiney, but rather discerning when the right one is working for you.  Such discernment is tricky, especially when it's being viewed only from one's own subjective perspective

If you'd like personalized care, link in profile to the contact page on my website to request brochures in session schedule via email.  If you don't see it in a day or two, be sure to check your spam folder

💫 The health & longevity benefits of tending your spirit are scientifically well established in such area as life purpose, service, volunteering & community.  This powerful medicine actively lower stress hormones, reduce inflammation and the risk of cognitive decline, and release feel-good chemicals like oxytocin and dopamine in the brain

Here is such healthcare wisdom from above.
Love of God and love of neighbor are at the top of the list, above self
📜
Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”  He said to him: “‘You must love Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. The second, like it, is this: ‘You must love your neighbor as yourself.
Matthew 22:37-39

Can you imagine what the world would be like if everyone did this? Not only would we be healthier, we would be happier

📜
Do nothing out of contentiousness or out of egotism, but with humility consider others superior to you, as you look out not only for your own interests, but also for the interests of others.
Philippians 2:3-4

📜
My son, do not forget my teaching, and may your heart observe my commandments, because they will add many days and years of life and peace to you
Proverbs 3:1-2

There really is more happiness -- and better health -- in giving than there is in receiving

How do you nourish your soul by putting God & neighbor first?

Here are the key criteria for selecting high-quality olive oil, whether extra virgin or otherwise.
SAVE, SHARE, COMMENT

1. Look for "EXTRA VIRGIN" (the highest grade)

· Chemical & sensory standards: Must have low acidity (under 0.8%), no chemical defects, and positive fruity/floral aromas.
· Avoid: "Virgin," "Pure," "Light," or "Pomace" oils—these are refined and lack both flavor and health benefits.

2. Check the HARVEST & BOTTLE DATES

· Fresh is best: Look for a harvest date within the last 12–18 months.
· Best-by date: If present, should be 18–24 months from harvest.

3. Read the ORIGIN LABEL

· Single origin (e.g., "Product of Italy/Greece/Spain") is more traceable than "Bottled in Italy" or a blend of multiple countries.
· PDO/PGI seals (Protected Designation of Origin) indicate olives from a specific high-quality region.

4. Check the PACKAGING

· Dark glass or opaque tin: Protects oil from light and heat. Avoid clear bottles or plastic.
· Small size: Buy in quantities you’ll use within 2–3 months after opening.

5. Assess TASTE & AROMA

· Fresh: Smells like grass, green tomato, artichoke, or almond.
· Peppery or bitter finish: Indicates high antioxidants (polyphenols). A slight throat "cough" is a good sign of quality.
· Rancid smell: Crayon, wet cardboard, or stale nut—reject it.

6. Check HARVEST METHOD & certifications

· Cold-extracted or First cold press ensures no heat damage.
· Organic certification (USDA Organic, EU Organic) if you prefer no pesticides.
· Third-party tests (e.g., IOC, Australian Olive Association) add assurance.

RED FLAGS to avoid:

· Terms like "Made with" or "From Italian olives" (often blended with lower-quality oil)
· Low price (under $10/L usually indicates poor quality)
· Store brands without harvest date

For best value & quality, buy directly from specialty stores or trusted producers in-season (November–January).

🥩 🥦 There are multiple factors. It's never just one thing. Here's just a few of the more important variables.

Biochemical individuality determines digestive enzyme function, nutrient absorption/malabsorption, liver methylation, co-enzyme nutrient bioactivation, glandular weakness, hormonal imbalances, neurologic dysfunction, immunoinsufficiency etc.

Additionally, some individuals have genetic variations & limitations further compounding all of the above factors.
All of this can be summarized as a constitutional weakness. We are each made differently. Some weaker, some stronger

Furthermore, humans are now 6,000 years removed from our original perfection in the garden of Eden. With each generation more metabolic dysfunction enters the human family. I have additional information further detailing & documenting this if you're interested

One size carnivore doesn't fit all ~ Neither does one size vegan. Throughout 40 years in clinical nutrition practice I've had the opportunity to work with many patients who desperately want to be vegan or vegetarian, sometimes for up to two years doing everything possible to support their health efforts and all the while watching them get sicker and sicker. Eventually I break the sad news: you need to eat some meat, and watch their health rapidly turn around.

I've also seen some sickly carnivores, and likewise helped them recover their health by easing them back in to the wonderful world of plants. Neither one size vegan, nor 1 size carnivore fit all

Interesting, Jesus was an omnivore
💫
We need a new approach, an understanding that nutrition can and must be PERSONALIZED. Bio-individuality rules

The "I HAVE A LIVER" rationale isn't really sound. For example liver function tests are not really FUNCTIONAL. They don't tell us how WELL the liver is working. Rather, they tell us when it is damaged or diseased

Serum liver enzymes can be within so-called "normal" range, and yet 80% of us walk around with a sluggish, congested liver that flies beneath the radar of conventional medical detection. So-called "normal" isn't necessarily healthy nor optimally. Both Phase 1 and Phase 2 liver detoxification pathways can be compromised while serum enzyme levels show normal

As a major metabolic director, liver is root cause for just about everything. 😒 NAFLD (non alcoholic fatty liver disease) is simply failure of an organ due to toxins such as heavy metals like mercury & aluminum or chemicals such as high fructose corn syrup, Glyphosate & zero calorie ARTIFICIAL sweeteners. These compromise the drainage pathways. We need targeted & tailored DETOX SUPPORT to get that stuff OUT! Sometimes the liver needs a little TLC

So no, not all detox protocols are a scam, but it is crucial to tailor detoxification to one's particular needs. The 2 key factors in determining this are
1. The specific toxin. One size detox doesn't fit all toxins. See comment about TARGETED DETOX
2. Your body's detoxification ability. You have 7 organs of elimination and drainage pathways. One or several of these may need more support than another. Request my DRAINAGE ASSESSMENT QUESTIONNAIRE to evaluate which of your body systems most need attention. Link in Profile to the CONTACT page on my website to request it

🌓 No doubt you've heard about Sardine's superpowers. No doubt you've also heard me say that every food has a dark side

Sardines can be a BPA bomb and contain arsenic, especially when oil packed

Of course, they contain significant omega 3, but unfortunately they are heated to 250°. Such fragile oils begin to degrade at 120°

Additionally, the heat increases leaching of BPA from the plastic liner in the can

Increasingly modern cans are BPA-free, but while the body of the can may not contain BPA, the lid does. Unlike most can's, Sardine tin lids have as much surface area as the body

BPA-free doen not mean toxin free. BPA alternatives are likewise toxic: BPA is being replaced with BPS or BPF, which are similar, less studied, and often equally harmful analogs. "BPA-free" labels do not guarantee the absence of these similar endocrine-disrupting neurotoxic chemicals. See the previous posts on my Profile page for their detailing this

Furthermore, tin lined cans usually contain epoxy resins, polymers or enamel/lacquer

If it weren't for all these toxins, Sardines would indeed be a superfood.
If you are a Sardine lover like myself, you'll appreciate this workaround.
Look for salt water pack, glass container and long expiration date 4+ years

What's your Sardine story?

🐌 THE ANSWER to obesity, diabetes, long haul and every other chronic condition, is the same as it's always been: diet, lifestyle & metabolic balancing

Sadly we live in a take a pill culture. People expect results at the speed of aspirin -- 20 minutes and the headache is gone. People would rather pop Ozempic or Metformin rather than make the hard changes. And hey, if it's COVID Paxlovid. NOT

Nutritional healing, by nature, is relatively slow. But so much deeper and so much better than pharma. For example, it takes red blood cells 120 days to recycle. The new food or supplement consumed today won't fully be integrated and FUNCTIONING in those RBCs for 4 months. As a rule of thumb I ask my patients to give the full impact of any dietary change at least 2 ~ 3 months.

This is precisely why I practice functional nutritional therapy only within the context of one's total lifestyle. After 40 years in clinical practice, I've learned that without doing so not only doesn't get to the root cause but is not sustainable

What symptoms are you trying to make go away and what is your expectation of the time frame?

More importantly, what root are you digging for so that you don't need to just manage symptoms, be it with meds or supps? If you'd like help digging deeper, I have a large shovel!

Added sugar in the form of SUCROSE is a processed disaccharide (glucose + fructose) leading to rapid blood sugar spikes, while naturally occurring FRUCTOSE is a monosaccharide found in whole fruits/vegetables accompanied by fiber, which slows absorption

Added sugar contributes to metabolic issues, whereas natural fructose is metabolized in the liver with less acute glycemic impact

The metabolic difference. Sucrose breaks into glucose (raising blood sugar) and fructose (metabolized in the liver). Natural fructose is primarily processed by the liver and does not require insulin for processing, resulting in a lower glycemic index

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts

Wholefood context matters. Added sucrose (white sugar, brown sugar, high fructose corn syrup) provides "empty calories". Natural fructose is packaged with vitamins, minerals & fiber

What about the difference between fruit juice and whole fruit? Don't get me wrong. I generally don't advocate drinking more than a few ounces of certain pure, unsweetened juice. The difference is explained in comments

😝 Here's how I weaned myself off fruit juice. This same principle applies to sugar and all processed food...

🌞 FOOD IS MORE than fuel and nutrients. Our biology is significantly influenced by light. Daylight and darkness set daily rhythm. The body interprets these signals through the eyes, brain, skin and metabolic & cellular pathways 🌚

Nutrients support the normal function of these systems. Vitamin A and carotenoids aid vision. Tryptophan, B-6 and magnesium are precursors to melatonin production. Essential fatty acids and antioxidants support the skin. Co-Q10, lipoic acid, minerals and B vitamins produce energt at the subcellular level

This is known as photonutrition. It's a way of looking at the intersection of light, daily rhythms and nutrition that supports overall health & wellbeing

The body isn't just biochemical. It's photochemical. It strongly responds to environmental cues like light, sound & vibration

Are you picking up some good vibrations?

Do you see the light of day? And are you seeing it at the right time of day that does the most good? 🕕 Continued in comments

Although many begin with sincere intentions to treat their health condition without meds, they don't fully exhaust all their resources before resorting to the drug. Perhaps they feel they just can't live this way and rationalize using it for a short time to get back on their feet. Before they know it it's been 2 years and they're stuck!
💊 ⏰️
Whether it's pain medication, steroid or NSAID, antidepressant, anti-anxiety, hormone replacement, PPI acid blocker, antibiotic or GLP drugs -- time frame matters. Many meds are designed to be addictive. The longer you're on it, the harder it is to get off

General guidelines for evaluating the impact of the duration of medication helps to maximize benefit & minimize risk in second image. Let me hear your questions about this in comments

There is a place for medication. In my playbook, it's last place -- VERY last. We each have a different threshold and perhaps you've reached yours. Beyond the physical, well rounded support helps - plenty of emotional, psychological & mental health support. Biochemical balancing is equally important. The mind-body is actually an inseparable single unit. What we think affects how we feel and eat. Likewise, what we eat affects how we think and feel

In 40 years of clinical naturopathic nutrition experience, for those coming to me for help, saying they've "tried everything" before resorting to medication, we usually are able to find something more that they haven't yet tried.
Proper, personalized mind-body support is key. 🗝

4 out of 5 of my patients who thought they had exhausted all their options were pleasantly surprised to learn that they actually hadn't and that there was more we could do
