Why Your Horse Isn’t a Lawn Ornament 🐴🚫

🤔 Let’s have a 𝙍𝙀𝘼𝙇 𝙏𝘼𝙇𝙆 about horse ownership. We’ve all seen it—or maybe we’ve even known someone who did it.
💰You buy a horse that’s “𝙗𝙧𝙤𝙠𝙚,” “𝙗𝙤𝙢𝙗𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙛,” and “𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚, 𝙙𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩.” and you pay a pretty penny for this horse.
You bring them home, ride them a few times, and then… life happens. The horse sits in the pasture for six months, a year, or even two.
Then, one sunny Saturday, you decide to pull them out, throw the saddle on, and expect them to be the exact same horse you bought. And when they aren’t? The frustration sets in.
Now you’re blaming the seller for charging you what the horse 𝘞𝘈𝘚 𝘞𝘖𝘙𝘛𝘏 when you purchased him…
🧐𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙙 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙩𝙝:
A horse is 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖 𝙗𝙞𝙘𝙮𝙘𝙡𝙚 you can leave in the shed for three years and expect to ride away on without pumping up the tires.
➡️𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙞𝙩:
If you spent years going to the gym, getting fit, and learning to run marathons, but then you sat on the couch for two years straight, would you expect to wake up tomorrow and run a 5K at your peak performance? Of course not! You’d be stiff, you’d be out of shape, and you’d probably be a little grumpy about the sudden demand for physical exertion.
𝙃𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙢𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙮.
They are 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙗𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 creatures—𝙉𝙊𝙏 𝙢𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨 with an “off” switch. They have brains of their own, and they have memories. When a horse sits idle, they aren’t just “staying trained.” They are losing muscle tone, they are losing their “work brain,” and they are gaining confidence in their own independence.
💭𝙇𝙚𝙩𝙨 𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙮:
Imagine you hired a professional tutor to teach you a complex language. You studied hard, you became fluent, and then you didn’t speak a single word of that language for two years. Would you still be fluent? You might remember the basics, but you’d be rusty, hesitant, and you’d need a refresher course to get back to where you were.
𝙀𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙮 “𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙡𝙮 𝙗𝙧𝙤𝙠𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙚” while they sit in a field is like expecting a house to stay clean while you leave the windows open during a windstorm. 𝙄𝙩 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙮...

✔️The reality is simple:
• 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙮. If you aren’t putting in the work, you’re spending the training they already have.
• 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙤𝙩𝙨. They have bad days, they get bored, and they get “pasture sour.”
• 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣. If you stop talking to them for months at a time, the conversation is going to be a lot harder to pick back up.
If you want a horse that is safe, reliable, and a joy to ride, you have to show up for them—even when it’s cold, even when you’re tired, and even when you don’t feel like it. You are the leader. If you aren’t leading, they’re going to start making their own decisions, and those decisions might not match the ones you want them to make.

If you aren’t willing to put in the time to maintain their training, please don’t expect them to be the “perfect” mount when it’s convenient for you.

Utah, like much of the western US, is in a dire situation when it comes to water. We are a desert so we are used to being dry and carefully managing our water but this year is looking to be exceptionally ugly. With the extra dry conditions come a lot of hate toward the ag industry. The vast majority of people in this country are so many generations removed from where food comes from that has created scary attitudes and misconceptions. People who know nothing about ag are demanding regulation rather than asking us questions about why we grow what we grow.
Yes, alfalfa takes a lot of water. It also prefers hot, dry (low humidity) conditions. The biggest thing these people are missing though is the why. Why do we grow alfalfa? Alfalfa is protein. Even herbivores require protein in their diets. Our ability to grow alfalfa for the protein source is why the US has never had a big problem with BSE. While other cooler, wetter countries were using animal by products to add protein we were using alfalfa.
This comment from a lovely person from Carbon County is just one of so, so many similar comments we are seeing daily. So much ignorance and hypocrisy, so few open minds.

We split a quarter cow from a local farm thinking we were upgrading our freezer with high-quality, grass-fed beef… but now I’m starting to understand why so much beef is grain-finished.

It’s not that the meat is bad—far from it. The texture is fine, and you can tell it’s good quality. But the flavor? It’s just too strong for me. There’s this earthy, almost gamey taste that lingers, and no matter how I cook it, I can’t seem to tone it down.

I really wanted to love it. On paper, grass-fed sounds like the better, cleaner choice. But the taste is honestly making it hard to enjoy.

Now I get it—why so much “grass-fed” beef is still finished on grain. That extra step must mellow things out, because this full-on grass-fed flavor is way more intense than I expected… and not in a good way for me.

Tom & I learned at 20 years old that we had champagne taste but less than a beer budget. We bought the best we could afford & learned a lot. We are what we are today because we had to learn to make our own.

You’re not “priced out of the horse market”… your expectations are just too high.

I was listening to Clinton Anderson talk about this, and he nailed it—
you can go find a horse for cheap (sometimes basically free), put the work into it, improve it, sell it… and repeat.

But here’s the part people don’t want to hear:
you might not get the horse you want right away.
That’s the reality.

It’s champagne taste on a beer budget.

Horses have always been expensive. The purchase price is just the entry fee—feed, vet, training, time… it all adds up. No one owes you a finished, fancy horse at a discount.

If something feels “too expensive,” you’ve got two options:
adjust your expectations… or build it yourself.

Because saying the horse market should be cheaper for you is like saying Lamborghinis should lower their prices so you can own one.

If that’s the end goal?

Start with your version of a Ford Focus. Put in the time. Learn. Flip. Grow.
The horse you want is earned long before it’s bought.
