Why Your Horse Isnโt a Lawn Ornament ๐ด๐ซ
๐ค Letโs have a ๐๐๐ผ๐ ๐๐ผ๐๐ about horse ownership. Weโve all seen itโor maybe weโve even known someone who did it.
You buy a horse thatโs โ๐๐ง๐ค๐ ๐,โ โ๐๐ค๐ข๐๐ฅ๐ง๐ค๐ค๐,โ and โ๐๐๐๐ฃ ๐ฉ๐๐๐ง๐, ๐๐ค๐ฃ๐ ๐ฉ๐๐๐ฉ.โ and you pay a pretty penny for this horse.
You bring them home, ride them a few times, and thenโฆ life happens. The horse sits in the pasture for six months, a year, or even two.
Then, one sunny Saturday, you decide to pull them out, throw the saddle on, and expect them to be the exact same horse you bought. And when they arenโt? The frustration sets in.
Now youโre blaming the seller for charging you what the horse ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ when you purchased himโฆ
A horse is ๐ฃ๐ค๐ฉ ๐ ๐๐๐๐ฎ๐๐ก๐ you can leave in the shed for three years and expect to ride away on without pumping up the tires.
If you spent years going to the gym, getting fit, and learning to run marathons, but then you sat on the couch for two years straight, would you expect to wake up tomorrow and run a 5K at your peak performance? Of course not! Youโd be stiff, youโd be out of shape, and youโd probably be a little grumpy about the sudden demand for physical exertion.
They are ๐ก๐๐ซ๐๐ฃ๐, ๐๐ง๐๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ฃ๐, ๐ฉ๐๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ฃ๐ creaturesโ๐๐๐ ๐ข๐๐๐๐๐ฃ๐๐จ with an โoffโ switch. They have brains of their own, and they have memories. When a horse sits idle, they arenโt just โstaying trained.โ They are losing muscle tone, they are losing their โwork brain,โ and they are gaining confidence in their own independence.
Imagine you hired a professional tutor to teach you a complex language. You studied hard, you became fluent, and then you didnโt speak a single word of that language for two years. Would you still be fluent? You might remember the basics, but youโd be rusty, hesitant, and youโd need a refresher course to get back to where you were.
๐๐ญ๐ฅ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐ ๐๐ค๐ง๐จ๐ ๐ฉ๐ค ๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ฎ โ๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ง๐ค๐ช๐๐๐ก๐ฎ ๐๐ง๐ค๐ ๐ ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐๐ฃ๐ฉ๐ก๐โ while they sit in a field is like expecting a house to stay clean while you leave the windows open during a windstorm.
The reality is simple:
If you arenโt putting in the work, youโre spending the training they already have.
They have bad days, they get bored, and they get โpasture sour.
If you stop talking to them for months at a time, the conversation is going to be a lot harder to pick back up.
If you want a horse that is safe, reliable, and a joy to ride, you have to show up for themโeven when itโs cold, even when youโre tired, and even when you donโt feel like it. You are the leader. If you arenโt leading, theyโre going to start making their own decisions, and those decisions might not match the ones you want them to make.
If you arenโt willing to put in the time to maintain their training, please donโt expect them to be the โperfectโ mount when itโs convenient for you.
