Why Your Horse Isnโ€™t a Lawn Ornament ๐Ÿด๐Ÿšซ

๐Ÿค” Letโ€™s have a ๐™๐™€๐˜ผ๐™‡ ๐™๐˜ผ๐™‡๐™† about horse ownership. Weโ€™ve all seen itโ€”or maybe weโ€™ve even known someone who did it.
๐Ÿ’ฐYou buy a horse thatโ€™s โ€œ๐™—๐™ง๐™ค๐™ ๐™š,โ€ โ€œ๐™—๐™ค๐™ข๐™—๐™ฅ๐™ง๐™ค๐™ค๐™›,โ€ and โ€œ๐™—๐™š๐™š๐™ฃ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™ง๐™š, ๐™™๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™š ๐™ฉ๐™๐™–๐™ฉ.โ€ and you pay a pretty penny for this horse.
You bring them home, ride them a few times, and thenโ€ฆ life happens. The horse sits in the pasture for six months, a year, or even two.
Then, one sunny Saturday, you decide to pull them out, throw the saddle on, and expect them to be the exact same horse you bought. And when they arenโ€™t? The frustration sets in.
Now youโ€™re blaming the seller for charging you what the horse ๐˜ž๐˜ˆ๐˜š ๐˜ž๐˜–๐˜™๐˜›๐˜ when you purchased himโ€ฆ
A horse is ๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ฉ ๐™– ๐™—๐™ž๐™˜๐™ฎ๐™˜๐™ก๐™š you can leave in the shed for three years and expect to ride away on without pumping up the tires.
If you spent years going to the gym, getting fit, and learning to run marathons, but then you sat on the couch for two years straight, would you expect to wake up tomorrow and run a 5K at your peak performance? Of course not! Youโ€™d be stiff, youโ€™d be out of shape, and youโ€™d probably be a little grumpy about the sudden demand for physical exertion.
They are ๐™ก๐™ž๐™ซ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ, ๐™—๐™ง๐™š๐™–๐™ฉ๐™๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ, ๐™ฉ๐™๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™ ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ creaturesโ€”๐™‰๐™Š๐™ ๐™ข๐™–๐™˜๐™๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™š๐™จ with an โ€œoffโ€ switch. They have brains of their own, and they have memories. When a horse sits idle, they arenโ€™t just โ€œstaying trained.โ€ They are losing muscle tone, they are losing their โ€œwork brain,โ€ and they are gaining confidence in their own independence.
Imagine you hired a professional tutor to teach you a complex language. You studied hard, you became fluent, and then you didnโ€™t speak a single word of that language for two years. Would you still be fluent? You might remember the basics, but youโ€™d be rusty, hesitant, and youโ€™d need a refresher course to get back to where you were.
๐™€๐™ญ๐™ฅ๐™š๐™˜๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™– ๐™๐™ค๐™ง๐™จ๐™š ๐™ฉ๐™ค ๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ฎ โ€œ๐™ฉ๐™๐™ค๐™ง๐™ค๐™ช๐™œ๐™๐™ก๐™ฎ ๐™—๐™ง๐™ค๐™ ๐™š ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™œ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™ก๐™šโ€ while they sit in a field is like expecting a house to stay clean while you leave the windows open during a windstorm.

The reality is simple:

โ€ข ๐™๐™๐™š ๐™–๐™ง๐™š ๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ฉ ๐™ง๐™ค๐™—๐™ค๐™ฉ๐™จ. They have bad days, they get bored, and they get โ€œpasture sour.โ€

If you want a horse that is safe, reliable, and a joy to ride, you have to show up for themโ€”even when itโ€™s cold, even when youโ€™re tired, and even when you donโ€™t feel like it. You are the leader. If you arenโ€™t leading, theyโ€™re going to start making their own decisions, and those decisions might not match the ones you want them to make.

If you arenโ€™t willing to put in the time to maintain their training, please donโ€™t expect them to be the โ€œperfectโ€ mount when itโ€™s convenient for you.

Utah, like much of the western US, is in a dire situation when it comes to water. We are a desert so we are used to being dry and carefully managing our water but this year is looking to be exceptionally ugly. With the extra dry conditions come a lot of hate toward the ag industry. The vast majority of people in this country are so many generations removed from where food comes from that has created scary attitudes and misconceptions. People who know nothing about ag are demanding regulation rather than asking us questions about why we grow what we grow.
Yes, alfalfa takes a lot of water. It also prefers hot, dry (low humidity) conditions. The biggest thing these people are missing though is the why. Why do we grow alfalfa? Alfalfa is protein. Even herbivores require protein in their diets. Our ability to grow alfalfa for the protein source is why the US has never had a big problem with BSE. While other cooler, wetter countries were using animal by products to add protein we were using alfalfa.
This comment from a lovely person from Carbon County is just one of so, so many similar comments we are seeing daily. So much ignorance and hypocrisy, so few open minds.

We split a quarter cow from a local farm thinking we were upgrading our freezer with high-quality, grass-fed beefโ€ฆ but now Iโ€™m starting to understand why so much beef is grain-finished.

Itโ€™s not that the meat is badโ€”far from it. The texture is fine, and you can tell itโ€™s good quality. But the flavor? Itโ€™s just too strong for me. Thereโ€™s this earthy, almost gamey taste that lingers, and no matter how I cook it, I canโ€™t seem to tone it down.

I really wanted to love it. On paper, grass-fed sounds like the better, cleaner choice. But the taste is honestly making it hard to enjoy.

Now I get itโ€”why so much โ€œgrass-fedโ€ beef is still finished on grain. That extra step must mellow things out, because this full-on grass-fed flavor is way more intense than I expectedโ€ฆ and not in a good way for me.

Tom & I learned at 20 years old that we had champagne taste but less than a beer budget. We bought the best we could afford & learned a lot. We are what we are today because we had to learn to make our own.

Youโ€™re not โ€œpriced out of the horse marketโ€โ€ฆ your expectations are just too high.

I was listening to Clinton Anderson talk about this, and he nailed itโ€”
you can go find a horse for cheap (sometimes basically free), put the work into it, improve it, sell itโ€ฆ and repeat.

But hereโ€™s the part people donโ€™t want to hear:
you might not get the horse you want right away.
Thatโ€™s the reality.

Itโ€™s champagne taste on a beer budget.

Horses have always been expensive. The purchase price is just the entry feeโ€”feed, vet, training, timeโ€ฆ it all adds up. No one owes you a finished, fancy horse at a discount.

If something feels โ€œtoo expensive,โ€ youโ€™ve got two options:
adjust your expectationsโ€ฆ or build it yourself.

Because saying the horse market should be cheaper for you is like saying Lamborghinis should lower their prices so you can own one.

If thatโ€™s the end goal?

Start with your version of a Ford Focus. Put in the time. Learn. Flip. Grow.
The horse you want is earned long before itโ€™s bought.
