Pumpkin magic and hands-on discovery at the ranch this week! 🎃✨

Our playschoolers jumped headfirst into fall with all things pumpkins! From fine motor skills to sensory play and cooking, here is a peek at what we’ve been up to:

🎨 Creative & Construction Play: Painting pumpkins, hammering golf tees into them for a little hand-eye coordination challenge, and crafting paper pumpkin art decorated with natural treasures found right here on the farm.

💦 Sensory & Science: Scrubbing and washing our pumpkins clean, then slicing them open to explore the seeds, pulp, and texture inside!

🥞 Farm-to-Table: Putting our cooking skills to work by making delicious, warm pumpkin pancakes together.

In between all the orange, we took a refreshing break to squeeze fresh lemonade 🍋, practice our letters, and introduce hand-sewing skills! 🧵🔤

Introducing our newest farmer! 🧑‍🌾

Our newest farmer from the Garden joined us at the Ranch this summer, brought to life by our Campers in Leadership Training (CILTs).

Since then, our Earthlings have been hard at work trying to uncover the mystery behind our newest farmer’s name.

After much investigating, wondering, guessing, and perhaps a little Ranch magic, we’re happy to report that he has finally revealed himself...

Meet Farmer Cornbread. 🌽

We’re pretty excited to have him around—and he’s even more excited to meet you! Come say hello to Farmer Cornbread in person at our Harvest Festival on October 18th. He’ll be holding down the fort in the garden and can’t wait to show you around.

Teamwork makes the dream work! 🪵✨

Our amazing farm team—featuring one of our talented campers, Farm Manager Marvin, and the facilities crew—joined forces to handcraft this brand-new teeter-totter for the children at Connolly Ranch!

Beyond just endless giggles, classic motion play like this is fantastic for kids. Teeter-totters naturally help develop:

💪🏼Core strength and balance as children stabilize their bodies.
🤸‍♀️Vestibular input, which supports spatial awareness and body coordination.
👫Cooperation and communication as kids learn to work together to keep the rhythm going.

Safe to say the kids love it! 🛝❤️

The Harvest Moon lights up our skies this weekend! Historically, its bright golden glow gave farmers extra time to bring in the final crops. There’s no better reminder of how deeply connected we are to the changing seasons.

Here at the ranch, everything is buzzing as we prepare for cooler weather! As the children get ready to welcome the harvest moon, they’ve been busy gathering acorns to offer to our local squirrels, whom we can hear scampering in the branches above. If you look up during outdoor time right now, you might even catch flocks of migrating geese journeying across the autumn sky.

What a magical, sensory-rich time to be outside. 🍂

(Bonus family weekend adventure: Look east just after sunset this Saturday night to spot the brilliant Harvest Moon—with a bright Saturn hanging out right beside it!)

Science confirms what we’ve always known at Connolly Ranch: spending time with animals is good for the soul! 🐴✨

A new study published by UC Davis researchers found that just 3 minutes of intentional interaction with miniature horses and donkeys can help reduce anxiety, stress, and feelings of sadness in teens.

The secret? A two-way connection. When we slow down, pay attention to their subtle cues (like a happy lip wiggle!), and respect their agency, the animals feel comfortable—and in return, we feel calmer and more grounded.
