DOMAINE DE LA MADONE BEAUJOLAIS VILLAGES ‘PERREON’ 2023

Le Perréon climbs to 450 meters on decomposed pink granite—the same rosé-colored rock that feeds neighboring cru Fleurie. Slopes hit 30 to 40 degrees, too steep for tractors, so brothers Olivier and Bruno Bererd hand-pick every cluster from organic vines averaging 50-plus years, many past 75. Indigenous-yeast fermentation, tank and concrete aging, zero oak. The result drinks like cru Beaujolais wearing a Villages label.

🪨 Decomposed pink granite at 450m—mirrors cru Fleurie
🌱 Organic, hand-harvested; vines 50–75+ years
🍇 Gamay, indigenous-yeast fermentation
🛢️ Aged in tank and concrete, no oak
✨ Aromas: red cherry, crushed violets
🍷 Palate: silky, mineral-fresh, fine-grained tannins

🍴 Pairing: roast chicken with herbs, charcuterie boards, or coq au vin—bright acidity and low tannin cut through fat and salt without overpowering lighter poultry.

Border a Grand Cru. Skip the Grand Cru price. 🍷

Four Burgundies that border prized terroir — including two reds from the exact same vineyard, bottled by two different growers. None of them a markdown, all of them fairly priced Cru Burgundy — and all four under $200.

🥂 Colin-Morey Saint-Aubin 1er Cru ‘Les Champlots’ 2023 — behind the Montrachet hill, 300m+, tense and saline
🥂 Colin-Morey Santenay 1er Cru ‘La Comme’ 2023 — on the Chassagne line, oolite limestone, chalky and taut
🍷 Lignier-Michelot Morey-St-Denis ‘En la Rue de Vergy’ 2022 — above Clos de Tart, organic, 1974 vines, silky
🍷 Bruno Clair Morey-St-Denis ‘En la Rue de Vergy’ 2022 — same vineyard, second grower, built to age

Same dirt as the famous names, without the Grand Cru price. Grab both reds and taste one site two ways.

🇺🇸 Maison Noir O.P.P. 2023 — Willamette Pinot with Burgundian lift, somm-made
🇪🇸 Álvaro Palacios Camins del Priorat 2024 — Garnacha, slate, and graphite from Priorat’s pioneer
🇫🇷 Domaine Raspail-Ay Gigondas 2022 — Châteauneuf’s neighbor, one block, one wine

Vadio Bairrada Vinho Tinto 2020 🇵🇹

After 13 years running red wine production at Esporão, Luís Patrão launched Vadio in 2005 with his wife Eduarda Dias. The estate is small — ten certified organic hectares across 27 plots in Vale D. Pedro, 20 kilometers from the Atlantic on one side, 20 from the Bussaco mountains on the other. Patrão’s father Dinis helps the estate by working the vineyards. And winery itself is a converted warehouse in Poutena.

🌱 Founded 2005 by Luís Patrão and Eduarda Dias
🪨 Clay-limestone soils, 65 meters elevation
🌊 20 km from the Atlantic, 20 km from the Bussaco mountains
🍇 Selected from 20 small plots, vinified separately
🌿 20–30% whole-cluster fermentation, indigenous yeasts
🛢️ Two winters in barrels and oak vats, plus a year in bottle before release
🍷 13% ABV, pH 3.04
📅 Bottled February 2023 — 20,000 bottles

Herbal lift on the nose. Classic Baga elegance underneath. Polished tannins, acid that holds for years, and a maritime salinity that runs through the palate. This is village-level Baga done right — structured but drinkable now, age-worthy but not waiting on you.

Pair with roasted leg of lamb and rosemary — the herbal aromatics mirror the rub, and acidity breaks down the fat. Or aged Manchego and hard sheep’s milk cheeses, where salt and umami pull out red fruit. Or grilled wood-fired pork chops: smoke and char meet structured tannin.

Caves São João Baga Novo 2023 🇵🇹

The Costa brothers — José, Manuel, and Albano — founded Caves São João in 1920. A hundred and five years later, it remains the oldest family wine company still operating in Anadia, and the only Portuguese producer offering library vintages commercially back to 1959. The Baga Novo (Young Baga) is their summer wine: 11% ABV, five days on the skins, stainless steel only. Built to be chilled. 🥶

🏰 Founded 1920 — oldest family wine company in Anadia
🪨 Clay-rich Bairrada soils, maritime climate
🍇 100% Baga
🌡️ Fermented in stainless steel
⏰ Five days of skin contact
🍷 11% ABV — light, chillable, dry
🌹 Aromas: strawberry, dried rose petals, light spice
✨ Palate: red cherry, mineral-toned juiciness, bright finish

Pair with grilled sardines or mackerel — the wine’s acidity cuts through oily fish proteins. Or salmon crudo and tuna tartare, where the wine’s high tone handles the oil without burying the fish. Or a lunch of jamón and Manchego: saltiness pulls the strawberry note forward.

This is Bairrada with the volume turned down. The Costa family has been working with Baga for a hundred and five years, and they know exactly what the grape can give you when you stop trying to make a serious red. Chill it, pour it cold, drink it young.

The Grape: Baga 🍇

Native to Bairrada. The name translates to “berry.” Thick skins, tight clusters, late to ripen — which in a maritime climate that won’t stop raining means rot is a constant threat. In the 1990s, plenty of growers gave up and replanted with international varieties. The producers who stayed are the ones who built the modern reputation of the grape.

🍇 Indigenous to Portugal; ~7,000 hectares planted nationally
🪨 Thrives on clay-limestone with strong sun exposure
🌡️ Late-ripening; needs a long growing season
🍷 Naturally high acidity and high tannins
🍒 Aromatics: sour cherry, wild plum, dried rose, leather, dried herbs
⏰ Aging potential: 10–25+ years in classic expressions
🍇 Often compared to Nebbiolo for structure and aging curve

What’s interesting is the grape’s range. Pick it earlier, ferment cool, skip the oak, and you get a light, chillable red — bright acid, low alcohol, dried-flower aromatics. Pick it later, ferment with whole clusters, age it in barrel for years, and you get a structured, age-worthy wine with tannins that need time to settle.

Same grape. Same DNA. Two completely different drinking experiences depending on the call the producer makes at harvest and in the cellar. Talk about versatility!

The Region: Bairrada 🇵🇹

A low-lying coastal plateau in central Portugal, 100 kilometers south of Porto and 15 kilometers from the Atlantic. Bounded north and south by the Vouga and Mondego rivers, east by the Caramulo and Buçaco mountains. The name comes from “barro” — Portuguese for clay. Cool Atlantic mist meets warm summer days, and the rain doesn’t stop…

🌊 Atlantic-influenced maritime climate
🪨 Clay-limestone soils (Lower Jurassic limestone)
🌧️ 900–1,000mm rainfall annually
🌡️ Cool nights, warm days — long, slow ripening
📅 DOC status granted in [1979]
🍇 Roughly half of the region’s 7,000 hectares planted to Baga
🏔️ Average vineyard plot size: [0.2 hectares]

Why it matters: The clay holds moisture through the long growing season. The limestone keeps acidity bright and gives the wines a crystalline edge. Combined with cool Atlantic air, you get reds with structure, freshness, and serious aging potential — without the heat-bombed alcohol of warmer regions.

This is the terroir under everything we’re showing you this week. Two producers, working a few kilometers apart, with completely different ideas about what to do with it.

Weingut Rudolf Fürst Riesling Grosses Gewächs Centgrafenberg 2022

Riesling has grown on the Centgrafenberg’s terraced parcels since the era of the Archbishops of Mainz, and Sebastian Fürst now leads the estate. This VDP Grosses Gewächs comes from iron-rich red Buntsandstein — primary rock that gives the wine more in common with Rheingau and Nahe Riesling than with Franken’s typical shell limestone. Bone-dry and single-cask, it’s built for long aging. Jancis Robinson tasting team: 17.5/20.

🍇 Variety: 100% Riesling, organic + biodynamic farming
🪨 Soil: Iron-rich weathered red Buntsandstein (primary rock)
🏷️ Classification: VDP Grosses Gewächs (Erste Lage’s top tier)
🛢️ Vinification: Whole bunches, foot-crushed, spontaneous fermentation
🌳 Aging: Single 2,400L Doppelstück cask
✨ ABV: 11–12.5% | RS: 2.1 g/l | TA: 7.9 g/l
🍑 Aromas: White peach, citrus zest, grapefruit
🌿 Palate: Chamomile, mint, sage lift, salty stone, smoke
💎 Finish: Chalky grip, grapefruit, bone-dry tension
🏆 Rating: Jancis Robinson 17.5/20 — “linear, lime-laced perfection”

Pairings: Sashimi-grade hamachi with yuzu — citrus zest and salinity bridge the fish’s umami; Thai green curry with lime leaf — chamomile/mint lift handles the heat; aged Gouda with a year in the cave — chalky grip cuts the cheese’s crystalline richness.

Weingut Rudolf Fürst Spätburgunder Tradition 2023

Pinot Noir has been planted in Bürgstadt and Klingenberg for centuries, well before German Pinot was on anyone’s radar abroad. Paul Fürst was a pioneer of serious German Pinot in the 1980s, trading knowledge directly with top producers in Burgundy, Oregon, and Switzerland. He was named German Winemaker of the Year in 2003. Sebastian earned the same honor in 2018. The Tradition cuvée draws younger vines and declassified lots from Centgrafenberg, Hundsrück, and Schlossberg.

🪨 Soil: Iron-rich weathered red Buntsandstein
📍 Sites: Centgrafenberg, Hundsrück (Bürgstadt) + Schlossberg (Klingenberg)
🌱 Farming: Organic + biodynamic practices
🍇 Fruit: Younger-vine and declassified parcels from the estate’s top sites
🛢️ Vinification: Open wooden vats, high proportion of whole clusters (Burgundian method)
🌳 Aging: Extended in barrel
🍒 Aromas: Red cherry, raspberry, rose petal
🌶️ Palate: Baking spice, silky tannins
💎 Finish: Franken’s signature ferrous mineral lift

Pairings: Duck breast with cherry reduction — red-fruit echo plus tannin to handle the duck fat; mushroom risotto with thyme — rose petal and baking spice mirror the earthiness of the mushrooms; charcuterie board with country pâté — silky tannins frame the cured fats without crushing them.
