Skyr has been a dairy provision of Icelanders for more than 1,000 years—dating back to the days of the Vikings—and is considered one of country’s national foods. It is a cultured dairy product, different from yogurt, and is thick, creamy and packed with protein. Our traditional Icelandic skyr is made with unique Heirloom Skyr Cultures that have been treasured and preserved to make skyr for hundreds of years. These one-of-a-kind cultures are what help give our skyr its distinct flavor and texture. It is not too tart, not too sweet and full of flavor.

“Réttir is my favourite day of the year.” -Pálina, Icelandic sheep farmer at Pálína & María 🐑

After a summer grazing in Iceland’s highlands, the sheep come home for the colder months. Réttir brings farmers, family, and friends together to gather and sort the sheep for their return home.

“I always look forward to meeting our sheep after their summer adventures. But the people that join us every year are what make the day even more special. We have the same group of people, distant relatives and family friends that come and help us every year, so réttir in a way keeps us connected. Knowing it’s been that way for centuries and all my ancestors did this just as we do, is truly special.”

This year’s réttir came with rain and gloomy skies, but the tradition carries on just as it has for generations. 🇮🇸

Congratulations to our 2026 Askur winners! Each year, IPers nominate colleagues who truly embody our values and our winners get the chance to experience the place that inspires everything we do.

From exploring the history of skyr at MS Iceland Dairies and Skyrland to experiencing Iceland’s food culture and off-the-beaten-path adventures, this year’s trip was one to remember. 🐄⛰️
