This Saturday at 9am ET: The Lifelong Collection of Christian Canales. Roumier and Comtes Lafon were among the very first doors to open to Christian in 1974. He never stopped collecting them in the five decades that followed, taking whatever they would allot him.

At Roumier, that loyalty shows in Musigny across twenty-eight vintages from 1988 through 2020, Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses running almost seamlessly from 1988 through 2021, and three bottles of the exceedingly rare 1988 Bonnes-Mares Vieilles Vignes. Christian loved Lafon, and once recalled a time when he drank it nearly every day. Its thirty-seven vintages of Montrachet begin with the 1977, and dearest of all to him was the 1982, the final vintage made by René Lafon.

Roumier & Lafon open the sale in lots 1-296. What comes to auction is Christian's loyalty made tangible, vintage after vintage.

Coming up this Saturday at 9am ET: The Lifelong Collection of Christian Canales. Since 1986, the heart of his collection has rested at Les Caves de Marly, just outside Paris, where Christian was among the cellar's very first private clients.

Some cellars are built. Les Caves de Marly was quarried. Beneath the quiet town of Le Port-Marly lie three kilometers of galleries carved out in the late nineteenth century, when the chalk was excavated to raise the grand Haussmannian buildings of Paris. What remained was an underground world naturally suited to the aging of w**e, with chalk naves rising as high as ten meters. There is no heating, no cooling system, and no humidifier fighting against nature, only a steady 10°C year-round. Every bottle is wrapped three times in protective film and rests in near-total stillness.

Chef Alain Dutournier discovered the site in 1980, and as he puts it, "it's not the price that makes a good w**e." At Marly there is no great bottle and no unworthy one, only w**e, cared for properly and given every chance to become what it was always meant to be.

On Saturday, October 3 at 9am ET, we present The Lifelong Collection of Christian Canales, nearly 1,000 lots built over half a century. It is overwhelmingly Burgundy from the growers he knew best, with a Rhône selection reaching back to 1985 Château Rayas and a final toast of 1858 Ferreira Garrafeira Port.

In 1974, Christian and his wife Michèle drove to Burgundy, fascinated by how one grower's hand could lift a w**e above a neighbor's from the very same soil. Roumier, Rousseau, Comtes Lafon, and DRC welcomed them in, each telephoning a friend down the road to say Christian was on his way. He stayed loyal to those domaines for fifty years, never turning down a w**e or a vintage. Neither he nor Michèle came from a family that knew fine w**e, so they learned side by side, and pairing bottles with her exceptional cooking was among his great prides. He hosted extraordinary dinners, always in the spirit of sharing.

Christian passed away in August at the age of eighty, in the heart of Burgundy harvest, a final connection, perhaps, to the region that shaped his life.

Last Thursday, we gathered at HIDE Mayfair for an evening with Coche-Dury, and the w**es did not disappoint.

We brought together a small group of collectors for a deep dive through Coche, from Meursault and Perrières to three vintages of Corton-Charlemagne, with 2002 Krug in magnum to start and 2009 Château d’Yquem to finish.

The 2014 Meursault was an early standout, while Coche’s red Meursaults were a delicious surprise. By the final flight, Corton-Charlemagne had everyone’s attention, with the room split between the 2013 and 2014 for w**e of the night.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at HIDE and made the evening what it was. We’re already looking forward to the next one in London. 🍷

On September 17th, our UK team is hosting a Coche-Dury dinner at HIDE in Mayfair, an evening built around one of the most sought-after names in all of white Burgundy: the full range of cuvées and vintages, poured in depth and unhurried. Krug in magnum to open, Meursault and Meursault Perrières reaching back to 1999, Corton-Charlemagne across three vintages, and a 2009 d’Yquem to close, all served in the private dining room of a Michelin-starred restaurant overlooking Green Park.
