Eastern Red Cedar. Let's talk about it!

Juniperus virginiana - commonly referred to as Eastern Red Cedar - is the only cedar native to Southern MN. But here's the catch! It's actually not a cedar at all!

As the scientific name suggests, the Eastern Red Cedar is actually a Juniper!!

The Eastern Red Cedar is a dioecious species. Dioecious translates to "two houses" and means male and female trees are completely separate. You can see the difference pictured here. Only about 27% of trees in our region are strictly dioecious, which makes this extra cool!

Lastly, Juniper berries? Not berries at all! They are actually the pollinated female cones!

I think it's a pretty neat species. It also smells great. So these stems are on their way to the dehydrator for your simmer pot enjoyment. 😉😊

Late last winter, I had a catastrophic incubator failure. I lost - quite literally - hundreds of developing chicks. Of the handful that survived the failure, most hatched with deformities. Some were so profound I euthanized the chicks shortly after hatch. Others were given time to try to overcome their differences. Most did not.

Except D***y.

D***y's crossbeak was so significant I wasn't hopeful, but he has flourished despite all odds. He eats and drinks with his head upside-down like a flamingo, but he eats and drinks all on his own. He is small, of course, but he has a BIG personality. He's down for snuggles, anytime. He sits patiently while I periodically trim his beak to make his life a little easier.

Will D***y ever be "useful?" No. Will D***y ever be part of any breeding project? No. Is there a chance he'll become a house chicken, at least for the winter? Maaaaaaaybe. 🤭

Even without food all over his face he's not much to look at, but he has my heart. 💚

Something has been hiding tomatillos and ground cherries in the straw bales. So I guess I don't have to wonder what my main weeds in the garlic field will be next year. 😅

We go through an awful lot of straw this time of year! Sometimes I have to weigh it down to keep it on the dumper from Point A to Point B. It's faster than using bungee cords. 😅

We've already snagged a trailer full from Lone Pine Acres LLC, and we'll need to run back for more this week.

Our driveway is a long, steep gravel hill. I got this electric trike scooter so the kids could get their bicycles up and down the hill easier, to encourage them to go on more bike rides.

This guy will have to go back to walking *anywhere* on the property - even across the yard - for the kids to have a chance to use it, though. 😂

This is the fourth year our lilac bushes have rebloomed after the foliage has already dropped, late in the fall. It's killing the bushes. I'm not sure they'll be alive next spring. Climate change bums me out. 😔

Garlic planting season is upon us! I'm putting 23 varieties of softneck and hardneck garlic in the ground this fall, as well as Elephant Garlic (actually a leek), and two types of shallots!

I hope everyone is excited for a garlic smorgasbord next summer!! 🧄🧄🧄

I grew just a few Sweet Chocolate bell pepper plants this year. I'll be growing more than a few next year. 😍🫑
