I had the opportunity recently to spend a morning with Our Community Table Ministries, and I came away encouraged by both the simplicity and the impact of their ministry. Their mission is straightforward: to feed the hungry and spread God’s love. The morning began with prayer, followed by an impressive operation. Food had been cooking throughout the morning in their large smokers, and at 10:00 a.m. Volunteers began what they call “plating.” By 11:07, they had prepared more than 2,200 meals. What struck me was how intentionally they make room for everyone to participate. Even those who cannot stand for long periods can sit and work along the assembly line. Once the meals are prepared, twelve delivery teams take them into the community along with bread, Publix donations, and pre-assembled bags of rice and beans to help families through the week. I had the opportunity to go to Indiantown with Kevin Johnson and help distribute meals, bread, and rice and beans to families in a local trailer home community. Seeing the ministry firsthand made the work feel Much more personal. This isn't simply “food delivery.” We carry meals into the community, pray with and for the people we meet, and share the love of Christ through a simple meal and a personal connection.
Our Community Table currently serves Martin County and Okeechobee County and is beginning to expand into Fort Pierce. Their ministry also extends internationally to Colombia, including Bogotá and surrounding areas. They are also preparing for an important new chapter in disaster relief. A large semi-truck has been donated, and Our Community Table has already demonstrated that they can reach disaster areas quickly, sometimes arriving in communities where other assistance has not yet arrived. The truck now needs to be “upfitted” with bunks, water, electricity, and other equipment so it's ready to serve when disaster strikes.
There are several ways we, as the PCPC Family, can come alongside this ministry:
PRAY. Pray for the families being served, for the volunteers and delivery teams, and for wisdom as Our Community Table continues to expand. Pray especially for their hope of one day having a facility of their own. They currently operate from Grace Place, while the Okeechobee ministry operates out of North Okeechobee Church of God.
SERVE. There is a real need for more volunteers, particularly delivery drivers and teams. More drivers would Our Community Table currently serves Martin County and Okeechobee County and is beginning to expand into Fort Pierce. Their ministry also extends internationally to Colombia, including Bogotá and surrounding areas. Allow Our Community Table to take meals into additional communities and serve more families. Perhaps your family could commit to serving together on a regular basis, even just once a month. Whether you help with plating or deliver meals into the community, there is a place for you to serve.
GIVE. Consider making an individual gift to support the ministry or helping our Mission Committee provide funding for Our Community Table’s ministry in Colombia. Another significant opportunity is helping fund the upfitting of the new disaster-relief truck. During my morning with Our Community Table, I was reminded that ministry doesn't always have to be complicated. Sometimes it looks like preparing a meal, loading a truck, driving into a neighborhood, and sitting with a family for a few minutes. A meal meets a physical need, but the love of Jesus behind it points people to something greater. I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn more about this ministry and hope we can find meaningful ways to join them in feeding the hungry and sharing God’s love.
