Food safety should concern all of us; wonder why we are seeing so many recalls and safety breaches?

Last year, federal agencies responsible for protecting our food supply lost thousands of employees—including inspectors and highly experienced food-safety professionals. USDA’s FSIS lost about 8% of its workforce, while FDA lost at least 3,900 employees.
These are the people who inspect meat, poultry and eggs, monitor food safety, prevent animal and plant diseases, and enforce food-safety standards. Losing experienced inspectors and institutional knowledge raises legitimate questions about how effectively the government can protect you.
When food-safety oversight is reduced, consumers have a reason to pay attention. Especially when so much of our food supply is already highly industrialized.
