"Fear not I bring good tidings, unto you is born this day a Savior, who is Christ the Lord! See them stars and us below? They were shining on them sheppards then, two thousand years ago. So you see that's how it started, with a bunch of guys like you. Who could see through all the hoopla and give this day it's due. That's why he told the sheppards first. See, God trusts the simple man. So he signed your kind up early, because he knew you'd understand." Cowboy Camp Christmas by Baxter Black.
I think I share this passage almost every year. I read it to the boys as well and also have them listen to Baxter Black's "The Littlest Sheppard." Tonight, as I check stock one last time the clock has struck midnight, its now Christmas. I don't really need to be out here. We choose, keep, and breed animals that can do it on their own. Although on this night, of all nights, something calls me to the barn.... the stable, or at least our stable. I go there a lot of nights late to just enjoy the quiet and the wonder of my chosen work, but this night is different. I feel a need to be close to the stock, you see that's how it started, and I guess it brings the meaning of the day closer to home for me. To all my great farmer friends out there, I want you to remember, every time you think that what we do doesn't matter and nobody sees or hears us. Our kind was invited to the most important meeting in history, and for good reason. We see things that have no explanation a lot, almost on a daily basis. So it's no wonder we were invited, we'd believe! Merry Christmas to you and yours!
