Temperament matters more than most people realize.

When people are shopping for cattle, they often focus on color, size, pedigree, or price. Those things matter, but temperament affects your daily life with cattle more than almost anything else.

A difficult animal costs money.

* They are harder to move and handle.
* They create more stress during routine management.
* They are more likely to challenge fences, gates, and facilities.
* They increase the risk of injury to people and other animals.
* They take more time and labor.

As our program has grown, we’ve become much quicker to make decisions based on temperament. Good cattle should be productive, but they should also be manageable.

For bulls, the stakes are even higher.

A bull influences an entire calf crop. If he passes along poor disposition, you’ll be dealing with that trait for years. If he passes along calm, sensible behavior, you’ll see those benefits throughout the herd.

That doesn’t mean we expect cattle to act like pets. Cattle should still be cattle. We simply want animals that are calm, respectful, and easy to work around.

Because at the end of the day, good temperament isn’t just a convenience; it’s a trait that contributes to safety, efficiency, and the long-term success of a herd.
