Found another garage mama. I have no idea how I missed her because I looked everywhere (I thought) after I found the first one. This one only had one egg left. I found evidence of others being stolen and eaten or dropped. I moved her in with the broody mama in ny shed. How many other unauthorized satellite hatcheries do you think I’ll find? 🤪😬

Garage mama update.

In case you didn’t know, the weather has been miserable here the last week or so. Over 100 and usually well over 30% humidity. Today was a doozy! I’ve been keeping an eye on mama and babies while organizing a brooding pen for her. Had to move and repair one, then get some nice sand. Because of my chronic illnesses and the medication I take, being in the sun and/or heat is very hard on me, but I mostly got it done. It’s not perfect, but it should keep them safe. I went to check on them at 3:30PM; mama and 5 babies were on the garage floor. One baby and 9 eggs were left on the bench so Spencer helped me move everyone. Since she left the nest, we put the remaining eggs in the incubator. Several are already pipped and should be making an appearance soon.

Cheep Thrills Homestead update:

I noticed a few hens had suddenly gone missing, so I started looking around. I found one in the garage, sitting on top of a seed-starting tray—where she had apparently been secretly brooding eggs for about 21 days. 🫣🤪🐣

There is another broody girl in my shed- she had decided to make a best balanced precariously in some tubs so I moved her and the eggs down. 🤦‍♀️

I’m still missing 3 or 4 hens. Hopefully, Cheep Thrills Homestead had more unauthorized satellite hatcheries and they didn’t become someone’s dinner.

We have turkey poults available. 2 that are only 4 days old, 4 that are about 3 weeks old, and one that is around 2 months old. Parents are our Black Spanish pair, but they carry mixed heritage genetics and produce a fun variety of colors—including black, slate/gray, and lighter varieties.

It’s been a rough couple of days for us. We lost our one month old peachick yesterday (the dog decided to play with the pen and she/he disappeared). No blood, no feathers, no signs. Just gone.

Today, my curly feathered Sebastopol goose, Count Quackoo, literally keeled over dead with no signs, symptoms, or warning. 😭

Went out to tuck everyone in and make one last check. My jenny, Tofu decided to leave her egg deposit in the goat water....

Note to self: if you have POTS or Inappropriate sinus tachycardia and you are bent over refreshing waterers, do not turn your head to the side to talk to the geese no matter how demanding they are. It doesn’t end well. 😵‍💫🥴
