This year was a good showing at the county fair! One of my favorite traditions of the summer, I was even lucky to take home a best in class for some of my fancy work. 💜💙❤️

After carrying off with six of our girls over the Fourth of July weekend when we got home too late to put them up in the coop, our resident trash panda is being relocated to a new home today.

Free range chickens are an absolute joy, but it can be hard sometimes when you have to come to terms with the fact that everyone else also loves a chicken dinner. Our flock is down to six from the twenty seven total chicks we have brought home this year so far.

One of the best things about summer is the library’s summer reading program! Zero is currently invested in this little gem. (Spoiler alert… This historical fiction novel isn’t actually a story about ghosts 😜👻)

Here is a hint on what our next market will be.

Homesteading is a constant lesson in literal humble pie and patience. This ONE rhubarb crisp of the season is a product of a year’s worth of work. We planted our two current rhubarb plants last spring, and have tended and watered them faithfully since then. In order to establish a healthy rhubarb plant with strong roots and a solid foundation you do not harvest any stalks the first season, and the second year may only take a few. The third year and onward you may harvest half a rhubarb’s stalks. While they are GIANT, you cannot eat the leaves and roots for they are posionous. This crisp will be the only thing we are gifted in two years, but soooo worth it. To see my food go from the garden to the table in six hours, what a blessing.

We have started a new batch of rhubarb seeds this year, and I will pot them and hope to add them to a bed next year. Love this slow living life of mine.

“We were on a break!!”

Took a break from market this winter/spring season to focus on personal projects and family, but we are back now! Among other things during this break we grew our family by a flock of fourteen chickens, tripled the size of our garden to ten beds and a melon patch, and did a TON of reading (up to 170 books for the year!).

Our hope is to be more selective on the markets we attend this year, the goal is quality over quantity. While we LOVED all the events we got to be a part of last year and met a ton of amazing vendors and organizations it was just a bit much. Right now Reaching While Rooted is locked in for just one market in August with a few TBA. More on that as the time comes.

Happy one week to these babies and return of Sunday snippets. 🐥

The girls (we hope they’re girls) are starting to go through their first of many molts, growing in their wing feathers. We started with thirteen but are currently down to ten in the flock. It’s not unusual to lose a few for a variety of reasons but still sad.

It will take just seven more weeks until this batch is fully grown, though we won’t see eggs for another six months.

Countless hours on this

My first wearable. With the days getting longer I wanted to make something in springtime colors…

I have been immersed in the Outlander series this last month so was drawn to the reds, greens and pinks in this . It reminds me of a day in the highland hills foraging with the fairies. The color is a hard one to capture on camera which I kind of like. It gives the dress a little bit of an ephemeral feel to it.

Probably the first of many. These babies are addictive to make.

🤟🫶 Hats off to love!

Showed myself some and whipped up this adorable beanie. This week will be another chilly one but this cheesy little heart will be warm.

Enjoying these last few weeks of hibernation and being cozy indoors. Spring planting and chores will be here soon enough.
