Who's coming to the Ruston Farmers Market this Saturday?

One of the best things about market day isn't just what we bring. It's getting to spend a few hours with friends, neighbors, and all the other hardworking vendors who raise it, grow it, bake it, make it, and create it right here in Louisiana.

If you've never been, this is a great weekend to come, walk the market, visit with local producers, support small businesses, and take home something you can't find in a big-box store.

Come see us, say hello, and be sure to visit all the other vendors while you're there. The Ruston Farmers Market is one of the best collections of local growers, makers, bakers, and craftsmen you'll find anywhere.

See y'all Saturday morning!

What's your favorite fragrance?

For nearly a quarter of a century, Lorrie has been making soap at Briarhill Farms.

That's long enough to learn a few things.

A good bar of soap doesn't need to be complicated. It needs to clean well, feel good on your skin, and leave behind a fragrance you enjoy. That's what we've focused on for almost 25 years.

Goat milk soap has remained popular for good reason. The natural fats in goat milk help create a rich, creamy lather that many people find gentle and moisturizing. It cleans without leaving your skin feeling dry and tight, making it a favorite for everyday use.

Our specialty soaps are made with the same philosophy. Good ingredients. Proven recipes. Pleasant fragrances. Bars that are meant to be used, not just admired sitting beside a sink.

After thousands upon thousands of bars over the years, we've learned what works and what doesn't. We still make soap the same way we always have: one batch at a time, with the goal of creating a dependable product you'll reach for every day.

Nothing fancy.

Just good soap.

At Briarhill Farms, we’re not what you’d call commercial tomato people.

We’re more like Blue Bell Ice Cream:
“We eat all we can and sell the rest.”

We grow good food because we love good food. Which means if a tomato doesn’t make you stop mid-bite and stare off into the distance a little bit… We’re probably not interested.

And that brings us to the legendary Cherokee Purple tomato. IYKYK

Now listen… Cherokee Purples are not pretty. They’re not those perfectly round little red grocery store baseballs bred to survive a six-week truck ride and taste like stale cardboard with a side of styrofoam.

These things come out ugly sometimes.
Crooked.
Purple-gree-brown.
Lumpy.
Wrinkled.
Occasionally looking like they fought a prize fighter and lost.

But good grief alive… Again IYKYK

Slice one up with a little salt and pepper, and suddenly you remember what tomatoes USED to taste like before modern science got involved.

Folks wait on these every year.

We’ve had customers circle back through the market just to buy more. We’ve had people guard them in the passenger seat like precious cargo. We’ve had grown adults stand at the table eating samples with the expression of somebody reconnecting with a lost childhood memory.

That deep, rich, old-fashioned tomato flavor is why Cherokee Purples have become one of the most requested things we grow.

They may not win beauty contests…
…but they absolutely win supper.

And if the weather, bugs, raccoons, squirrels, blight, crows, deer, Tom, and general Louisiana foolishness cooperate, we’re hoping to have some available at market within the next week or two.

Pray for the tomatoes. 🍅

Correction from Briarhill Farms… 🍑

Apparently, somewhere between goats, honey, fighting squash bugs, and trying to keep tomatoes alive through this weird Louisiana weather, I got one week ahead of myself. TF

Peach Festival is NEXT Saturday, not this Saturday as I reported earlier...

That said… we ARE kicking off Peach Week early because, honestly, once peach fritters and peach fudge enter the conversation, there’s really no reason to delay such happiness.

So yes, all the peach goodies are STILL coming to market this Saturday in anticipation of Peach Festival next weekend:

🍑 Peach Muffins
🍑 Peach Fudge
🍑 Peach Fritters
🍑 Peach Lemonade

Along with all the usual Briarhill fare:
Fresh eggs, goat milk, veggies,
granola,
baked goods,
pralines, soaps,
beard stuff,
Books by Tom.
and probably at least one tired farmer. Maybe two...

Sorry for the confusion. I blame the heat, unscheduled rainstorms, and farming in general.

Share this post and help me fix my own mess. 🤦‍♂️🍑
