Tokach Angus Ranch

Tokach Angus Ranch Our operation is located 4 miles east of St. Anthony, the Angus mecca of North Dakota. Our present day headquarters was originally homesteaded back in 1898. sire.

The majority of our pastures are on the backside of the Missouri River breaks. Steep hills, woody draws, rocks and rugged terrain are characteristic of most of our summer pastures. The very first registered Angus female was purchased by Richard M. Tokach in 1950 from the famed Oak Coulee herd at Flasher, ND. While a few females have been added since that time, the majority of our cow herd traces b

ack to that original purchase. A highly maternal, functional cow herd is the foundation upon which we have based our genetic program. The Tokach females have earned a solid reputation throughout this region for their ability to excel under a low input environment. You will not find creep feeders, fancy calving barns, supplemental pasture feeding or other high labor, high input devices in our operation. You will find high-volume, thick-made, easy-fleshing females that graze until the snow gets too deep each year. Our females also know how to calve and take care of their young out in the open. Evaluation of seedstock on the basis of individual performance has been the focal point of our operation since day one. Our cow herd has been enrolled in Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR) since 1963. In addition to easily measured performance and carcass traits, selection pressure is also placed on scrotal circumference, fleshing ease, mothering ability and dispositions. Artificial Insemination (A.I.) was first used in our breeding program in 1977. Each May, we heat detect and A.I. more than 500 females. We believe in large sire groups and use a minimum of 50 straws of any outside A.I. This gives us a more accurate progeny test and leaves us with larger groups of genetically similar seedstock to work with in the future. After many years of selling seedstock by private treaty and consignment sales, we hosted our first production sale in 1975. This annual event has grown to the point that each February, we sell 120 bulls and 60 bred heifers. Visitors are always welcome to Tokach Angus Ranch. We are proud of our breeding program, our cattle, and our operation. We truly enjoy showing them to customers and cattlemen who demand the best in genetically superior seedstock.

Another busy weekend. Saturday morning we processed another group of calves. Thank you Tanner for your help on Saturday. Bentley was again helping to bring some of the calves up to the calf table, he is definitely grown up and strong for only being 10 years old. Briar and Bentley brought all the calves into the tub to load the alleyway. Gentry is now strong enough to close the alleyway gate. Richard continues managing the calf table and branding. Natalie handles the vaccinations. Ben handles the tattoos, DNA , ear tags. I load the tattoo pliers, DNA pliers and records the numbers plus tries to sneak in a few photos. Even Elliott is learning how to move the calves to the next pen with Gentry and Briar as his teachers. And we found where 'Oatmeal' the cat is keeping her baby kittens.
Sunday we celebrated Gentry's upcoming 4th birthday. Delicious food & cake. Gentry's kite gift was a big hit and the wind was just right for learning how to fly it.

Thank you to everyone who helped make our 51st Production Sale a success today! Mother Nature was on our side, and 50 degree weather is something we don’t often get to enjoy on sale day. We are incredibly grateful to so many people who helped make the day run smoothly.
• Thank you to our buyers and bidders for your continued support of our program.
• Thank you to our good family friend, Roger Jacobs, for auctioneering.
• Thank you to our cleanup crew, who work tirelessly behind the scenes.
• Thank you to the Kist Livestock staff for serving delicious Certified Angus Beef burgers, and to the yard staff for keeping the pens bedded.
• Thank you to our family for helping with the sale and pitching in during calving season.
• Thank you to Elaine for baking and to Judy for keeping the goodie bar trays full.

Days like today are truly humbling. We love being part of the cattle business because of the incredible people and the lasting relationships that are built along the way.
