Did you know that cats have territories they protect? Also on average male cats tend to have larger territories and fight more than female cats.
So what happens when someone drops a cat off in an area where another cat has an established territory? Cat fights, injuries, and sometimes death.
A few times Mack has been in fights with strays, but this time he required vet attention to lance his cat fight wounds, clean him up, revaccinate him and give him an antibiotic and pain medication. I can only imagine what the "stray" cat looks like and unfortunately it is not friendly so we cannot catch it to examine it.
Mack is fine and was back to his normal self the day after his vet visit, but now we have to worry whether Mack has been exposed to feline leukemia/AIDS from the bite wounds and he had to have his rabies vaccine boostered because the vaccine status of the stray is unknown.
If you or someone you know has a cat they can no longer keep and they are interested in "rehoming" it to a farm, please go talk to the farm to ensure they are willing to take on the cat. In the instance where a cat is just dumped, the cat may not have the necessary skills to survive or may end up meeting a terrible end which no one wants.
Also shameless plug: spay and neuter your cats so they do not contribute to the unwanted cat population.
