Hello from drought stricken yet soggy eastern Colorado! You may be wondering how we can be both soggy AND drought stricken, well my friends let me explain.

WE HAVE RECEIVED OVER SIX INCHES OF RAIN SINCE WEDNESDAY EVENING!! 😱 🎉 🤪 🌧️ ☔️

So…what we have is full catchment ponds at the bottom of the property, and all of the critters have lakefront property. ALL OF THEM 😆 The ground up here is saturated.

Luckily it did not all come at once (although several of the storms dropped an inch plus in a short amt of time) so the ground had ample time to absorb a lot of the moisture.

What does this mean in the long run? Well…we have to wait and see. Right now we are focused on making sure the animals are safe and healthy, and mitigating the eminent mosquito explosion.

We were so dry last winter and this year up to now that the pasture is doing now what it should have done in April/May…I’m not sure what that means for long term recovery. We’ve been feeding the herd grass hay out ON the pasture in hopes of protecting it some and hopefully we will get a fair bit of moisture over winter and in the spring to help the pasture bounce back.

Tell you what tho, it sure is nice to hear the frogs at night again after SO many months of dry dry dry 🐸

Hey all! Sorry for the hiatus. My gelding Freckles passed away suddenly on 7/7 so been reeling from that.

This drought has been kicking our butts. We are feeding hay to the cows on pasture so they can enjoy the pasture.

Finding said hay has been an adventure. *sigh*

The calves are all doing amazingly well 🥰

The garden has been…well…it’s doing okay even tho I didn’t get a lot in. Will be trying some late summer things here soon (like beets) and will try garlic this fall. The flowers are doing really well.

We have finally gotten some moisture! Not a TON, but much better than the NOTHING we had been getting. We put the herd on pasture, even though it is very sparse. We will give them a week or 2 and then start putting hay out in the pasture.

We got the calves tagged on Saturday 😂 why we didn’t do that earlier I don’t know. 🤷🏼‍♀️ It’s SO much easier to tell them apart and do head count. I just have to look for green yellow blue orange and white

Daffodil was adopted by our cow Cookie, but I’m still supplementing with bottles, and she is eating grass and we have some calf starter pellets available for them too, so she isn’t going hungry. Plus if she is hungry she is not shy about letting us know loud and clear 😆

There is one section of our property that has good grass, so of course the herd is hanging out here a lot. We don’t leave it open all summer because the cattle get into trouble trying to get to the green stuff near our leech field lol

Guess who we saw nursing off of Theresa tonight?! If you guessed Daffodil you’d be right! Yay! We will still continue bottle feeding her, but thrilled that she’s getting some supplemental milk.

Also, as of now Oreo and Cici are both pending their new homes! So excited for their futures.

We will post later this summer once we decide which of this year’s heifers might be available for purchase. 🥰
