It’s been a busy few days around the Whispering Winds and MLC. After getting the cattle moved to their summer pasture, it was time to finish working on the garden. The garden-usually is completely planted by now but with Mother Nature switching late winter and early spring, planting were gradually slowed to a crawl.

Part 1: Moo-ving Day

This is the day we move the cattle herd to their summer pasture. MLC, HLC2 and Wild Sage Fields cattle make up this herd, to varying degrees. Friends also showed up to help as this is always a big project.

Before the move, individual animal checks and branding those new calves need to be done. Although during the chaos, I didn’t get many pictures, our friend from HBR took this video of freeze branding a calf. It’s much less painful but also a bit trickier to get done well. We’ll know better this fall how well it worked.

When one first starts out on a new adventure, regardless of the amount of research you feel you’ve done, you soon figure out you don’t know what you don’t know. Sometimes that’s a big deal; sometimes of just a little fixable thing. Such is a current “fixable” thing . . . thanks to the handy Rancher. Some time ago, I purchased a goat/sheep hay manger online. It arrived, and after putting it together, it seemed like it would be perfect. UNTIL a yearling doe got her BIG, FAT head stuck between the bars. Luckily, the manger wasn’t terribly sturdy so the bars were able to be pulled apart just enough for her to get her head out.

In comes the handy Rancher.

Well. It finally happened.

When you have free ranging chickens, sometimes they find secret places to lay their eggs instead of the coop that has nice nest boxes. Kinda like an Easter egg hunt everyday. There’s one place they’ve never used before UNTIL RECENTLY however. Our egg collections have been pretty reduced this last week or so. Finally found it! The ONE place i can’t get to. 🙄

Good morning! You should have heard the chaos! I failed to record it (I was dealing with said chaos). But there was a cacophony of kids cranky cries this morning while they “patiently” waiting for moms to be released.

Suffice it to say, it was worth it! Between Poppy, Allie, and Jyn, there was a gallon of milk!! 🥛 you can see some of it below as well as a pic of the happy porcine (in the comments).

Good evening. This is the calm before the first overnight separation for milking the mamas tomorrow morning. Turn up the sound to hear the background evening bird songs-mockingbirds, western kingbird, meadowlark, phoebe, house finch and more. So peaceful.
