Whispering Winds Homestead We’re a small part of Meredith Land & Cattle, raising mini Nubian goats & chickens, tending our expanding gardens, and living our dream!

We enjoy creating good food from our goats’ milk, preserving the garden bounty, and sharing with family and friends.

The Rancher is pretty handy. He helped process a flat of apples. We were making dried apple rings (a favorite of a particular granddaughter 😉).
I think the Rancher actually has fun with the spiralizer.

On these near-and below-freezing nights, automatic water floats on the stock tanks must be disconnected and drained to protect the hydrants from freezing. Since the cattle are currently off-site in other pastures, the Rancher must go to each one to check for ice and hook the water back up for the day.
Luckily, it was a brief cold spell.

According to our favorite weather forecaster Denver & Front Range Weather, summer may FINALLY be over. It may not mean we’re getting the precipitation we need here on the central CO plains, but any little bit helps.
It also means we’ve been busy getting things ready for our first possible frost/light freeze. The automatic floats on the water tanks are out and drained; bedding refurbished for the 4-legged livestock that need it; and harvesting the remainder of the cold sensitive garden produce.

What a day it was! We started early as it was supposed to get into the 80s and it did. We rented a portable corral and alleyway which made this whole process easier (where they are is mainly just pasture).

The calves are now separated and at the Rancher’s cattle partners’ place for weaning. The 2 bulls and 2 steers (that will be processed at the end of the year) are hanging out at a friends place. And the cows were returned to the same pasture they’ve been in for another month or so. I think many of them are glad for the break from the calves. 😆

You can hear Art the cow dog was so excited, but then he was bummed that none of the cows came home yet. He did a great job rounding them up from the fields. Unfortunately I didn’t get any shots of that as I was wrangling the grandkids. 👵🏼

Well, not quite time to move all the cows but the bulls are sold and some of calves need maximum security! The Rancher and the Rancher’s cattle partner have been busy for a couple days getting the new locations ready. One of which is moving some hay to where the calves will be. (The Rancher had a little helper in the tractor.)

A good friend of the Rancher provided a fuel tank and stand he no longer used. After some refurbishing, it was time for assembly. The Rancher-in-Training learned new tractoring skills and finesse.
