Last night we welcomed three baby kids to for the first time in two seasons. Two girls and one boy were born with a few hiccups that have made mom a little weak and possibly needing more tlc into the weekend but babies are doing great.

We are underslept and definitely underpaid(someone should really talk to our farm boss), but that’s ok when you can head into your day job with 2 hours of sleep and overwhelmed in all the right ways with spring babies and snuggles.

We will be keeping one doe from this round as Nibbles, our awesome momma, has been our best goat to date. If everyone can send their good thoughts her way that she heals without complications after such a difficult birth, we would appreciate it.

✨Easter ✨I hope everyone had a lovely Easter Sunday. Swipe for a lovely surprise, aptly named Easter.

Spring has certainly sprung on Herkimer Farm!

On Sunday our first time ever incubating chickens produced 23 out of 24 eggs. What a hatch rate!

Later in the evening, I went to go close everybody up and stumbled upon our barn, cat, Mouse, had two kittens. We knew she was pregnant, but thought she had a couple more weeks to go.

We will be selling chickens from this hatch. A second hatch will be set up at our local school for a fun project. All the money from this current batch and the next will be going directly to the preschool and kindergarten classes for supplies or field trips.

And stay tuned! We haven’t even started delivering goat kids yet….

While I am hand picking the breeds I bring in for beauty and egg color, my current flock is still impressing me.

Last year we purchased a incubator that was on sale for the season and a scratch and dent deal. I knew which one I wanted for a few years and I’m so happy I finally got it! Because if you’re a homesteader, no matter what scale, you’re feeling the pain of increased prices this year. Turkeys alone have doubled in price per chick. I’m taking a few seasons to learn about breeding, bite the bullet and get a good base breeding stock of chickens(hello ), and then hopefully we will not need to feel that pain and can even help others in their chicken endeavors. No one should go broke to just get a little flock started.

In the meantime at least my current flock are definitely delivering a gorgeous carton. Time to get back to some gorgeous egg designs!

We have a new member of the farm family joining us next month!

We have been SO lucky to have had a buck available since we started with goats years ago, but our friends are moving on to bigger pastures (literally). Which meant we had to decide if we wanted to try to “rent a buck” or have our own. For disease and control purposes it was pretty clear when the time came, we wanted our own and I was pretty sure from the get go I was going to try to score a buckling.

Today made it official!

Still open to some name suggestions, but due to having some very funny family members, his current working name is Frijoles.

If you can beat that, leave your name suggestions in the comments!

We are treading softly back into the egg business.

After two years of our flock-and us- being put through the ringer mostly with predators, but just the natural ways of farm life and aging ladies, whacky weather, and 🐓 always finding new and fun was to die…. We are getting back on board slowly and steadily.

And no we are not raising our prices at this time. While the closest comparable eggs in store are pushing $8/dz and they still don’t hold a candle to our practices, our organic local feed has not started raising their numbers-yet. But we have some spring plans to reduce that cost even more so if the hammer comes down, we don’t feel the pain as much.

So if you’re looking for delicious, really pasture raised eggs, we got you.

Still $7/dz. Still happy hens. Still the Herkimer Farm you know and love.

*side note: I am truly going to try to post better here about the farm. The internet has been such a toxic and cruel place lately. But I hope to bring some more moments of beauty and joy even if it’s just our little following here. And we have so much already happening! Trust me, you’ll want to stay tuned because your feed is going to be overwhelmed with farm babies soon!

I really wish I was better at posting on our farm page but every time I try to find some routine to share this part of our life, it falls flat.

But we are still here and we are still going, just a bit less than usual. Things we are considering doing going forward this next season: more batches of meat chickens. Breeding our goats. Maybe turkeys but only if we can experiment to bring costs down. And focusing on foundations and structures to set us up for better success when we are ready to hopefully expand into our bigger dreams someday.

One bite at a time.
