The most recent post from the sums it up perfectly 👌
🗣️ “I’m working so hard, but I’m still not winning. What am I doing wrong?”
Maybe nothing.
That might be one of the hardest lessons in this industry: effort and outcome do not always arrive at the same time.
You can feed right. Buy the “right” one. Perfect your daily routine. Continue to take advice. Spend extra hours in the barn. You can do everything you know how to do, and still watch somebody else get their hand shaken.
Because here’s the humbling part: Everyone works hard.
You are not the only one getting up early. You are not the only one staying late. You are not the only one making sacrifices, spending money, missing important events, practicing showmanship, or wanting it so badly it hurts.
At a certain level, hard work isn’t what separates you. It’s what gets you there. Then some days, it really does come down to a look.
Who got the best looks at the right time. Whose animal fit that judge’s priorities the closest. Who got their animal closest to 12 o’clock. Who got the right class break.
A different judge, a different day, a slightly different look, and the outcome might change entirely. Call it timing. Call it circumstance. Call it luck.
Whatever you call it, you can’t control all of it. But what you can control is whether you’ve worked hard enough to be standing there when it finally falls your way.
See, hard work simply puts you where good luck can find you.
It doesn’t guarantee the outcome. It keeps putting you in position for the right judge, the right look, the right break, and the right day to eventually meet all the work you’ve already done.
So absolutely, evaluate yourself when you lose. Stay coachable. Find the holes. Get better. Just don’t let every loss convince you there must be something fundamentally wrong with what you’re doing.
Sometimes you need to get better. Sometimes someone else was simply better. And sometimes, when everyone in the ring has done the work, it’s just about whose day it is.
Hard work doesn’t make you entitled to the outcome, it prepares you for when the opportunity finally arrives.
