Yebiga's Rakija History Lesson:

Did you know that rakija was often wrapped in newspaper?
Commonly in the past, bottles of homemade rakija were frequently wrapped in old newspapers for transport, storage, or gifting. In villages, nothing was wasted, and newspaper was a practical packing material.

At the same time, a morning newspaper and a small rakija could be found together in cafés (kafane) across Serbia and the former Yugoslavia.

Older men would gather, read the news, discuss politics, and share a rakija.
Both were vehicles for conversation.

Bonus question: What else was done with old newpapers back in the day?

Tradition has no future unless younger people choose to carry it forward; and the interesting part is that they rarely preserve it exactly as it was.

They challenge it, refine it, and enable it to survive.

And though this holds true for culture in general, the story of rakija has provided us with an excellent example.

Rakija--aka the 'Next Big Thing' -- has been around for centuries.
The American market is only beginning to catch up.

Kudos to Chilled Magazine for finally taking a serious look at the category and including Yebiga in the discussion. We can tell you from personal experience that the interest is growing: from bartenders, buyers, restaurants, and people looking for something with real history and identity behind it.

In any case, it's always gratifying to see the rest of the industry starting to show it some love and respect. Thank you!
