Working on our campfire bread this weekend has been nothing but trial and error, but we finally figured it out.
Road trips create some of our favorite memories, and our daughter is always requesting homemade meals cooked over the fire when we are on the road. This campfire bread was her latest request and I’d say it was worth the effort. 🤍
Ingredients
* 3 cups all-purpose flour
* 1 packet (2¼ tsp) active dry yeast
* 1 tsp salt
* 1 tbsp sugar
* 1 cup warm water
* 2 tbsp olive oil or melted butter
* add any filler
Instructions
1. In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
2. Add oil, salt, and flour.
3. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
4. Knead for 5–8 minutes until smooth.
5. Place in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise about 1 hour (or until doubled).
6. Shape into a round loaf.
Dutch Oven Cooking
1. Lightly oil your Dutch oven or line it with parchment paper.
2. Place the dough inside and let it rest 15–20 minutes.
3. Put the lid on.
4. Cook with coals above and below the Dutch oven:
* About 8–10 coals underneath
* About 16–18 coals on top
5. Bake 30–40 minutes, rotating the oven every 10–15 minutes for even cooking.
6. The bread is done when golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped.
