Amen brother

I'm never really sure that people want to hear the truth about their horses. In this c**t starting business I used to give myself brain cramps trying to think of something positive to say about a critter that was mediocre at best, a future trip to the hospital at worst. Now I try to just rip the bandaid off. It simplifies life and truly, it only stings for a minute.

This past week I've had a couple of those conversations, and I've talked about where I thought some horses I know of were headed. Or at least, NOT headed in this program.

Years ago I think it was more my ego that used to send me balls-to-the-walls fixing and training on difficult horses...because despite what some folks think, difficult horses do exist. Back then I had something to prove. These days I do not. These days I have two young trainers learning the business under my tutelage, stepping up on c**ts daily, and if there is a horse in front of them that I WOULDN'T WANT TO THROW A LEG OVER, then I am going to say something to you, the owner. And you can like it or lump it, but it's not your neck on the line. Yet.

In the end, I'm only saving you money and grief by being honest. And if I am saying something negative about your horse, please listen. I will guarantee I've given my words some thought. I'm not just talking to hear the sound of my own voice.

‼️The horse industry needs to stop glorifying financial losses.

If you don't think of horses as investments, they probably won't be very good ones.

There seems to be an odd obsession in the horse industry with taking pride in losing money. People almost wear it as a badge of honor.

But tell me—what investment is guaranteed?
Do some investments lose money? Absolutely. Real estate does. Businesses do. Stocks do. Yet nobody celebrates losing money in those industries.

It makes me sad to see talented breeders and trainers continue pushing the idea that horses should be financial losses. When enough people believe that, it becomes an expectation instead of an exception.

Of course there will always be horses at different price points. Not everyone is shopping for the same thing, and that's okay.

But quality is quality.

There should be zero shame in producing quality horses, pricing them accordingly, and treating them like valuable assets.

Our horses have been, hands down, some of the best investments we've ever made. I'm not ashamed to say that one bit.

In fact, I wish more people in this industry could say the same.

Because profitable breeders, trainers, and horse businesses aren't bad for the industry—they're what keep it alive.

Horse industry ISO Help ads lookin like:

Responsibilities include but not limited to:
Feeding/watering 50 head
Riding & saddling 75 head
Cleaning 100 stalls
Mowing 150 acre pasture & my yard
Doctoring cattle, horses, dogs, cats, chickens, elk
Repairing all fencing on my property and the neighbors
No housing provided unless you want to live in the feed room ($700/month plus electric & entire barns water bill)
I might consider your dog & possibly throw your horse out in the retiree pasture (800/month plus feed and hay)
You might get to show (probably not because I need you to stay at home and take care of my kids & spouse while I’m gone (you will also need to be able to cook and clean for a family of 5))
Wipe my ass
Show up 7 days a week, 1 day off a year & it won’t be a major holiday
Pay is dependent on experience but I complete all of this with 3 broken legs & severe COPD in about an hour so starting pay is $12,000 year but you will gain invaluable experience being my personal slave and punching bag. No drama, laziness or drugs (even though I partake in all of that)
