Front Porch Pondering…

Early morning sweet corn picking with a sunrise to the east of us and rain falling around us. Not a bad way to start the day. ❤️

And then…the rainbow appeared in the west.

There’s an old farmers’ saying:

“Rainbow in the west, forty days of rest.” AKA…rain consisently in forecast for next 40 days, therefore hard for farmers to get outside work done.

Will it hold true? Who knows. But that’s farming. You watch the sky. You watch the forecast. You listen to the old-timers. And then you wait to see what Mother Nature actually decides to do. 😂

She gave us a very wet spring, followed by a very dry summer. Now we’ll see what she has planned for fall.

Maybe that rainbow in the west is telling us something. Maybe it was simply giving us something beautiful to look at while we picked corn in the rain.

Either way, we’ll take it. 🌈❤️

Because sometimes the best farm views aren’t the ones you stop working to enjoy…they’re the ones you get to work right through.

Front Porch Pondering…

That’s one heck of an office view.

It’s not fancy.
It’s not easy work.

But there’s something pretty special about those hours on the ’ole tractor. Time to let your mind wander. Listen to the sounds of nature. Watch the world around you. Talk to the Man Upstairs. And simply take in all the beauty God created.

It’s not a fancy life. It’s a hard life. But it’s a really good life.

The bottle calf crew. 🍼🐮❤️

We started with three — Poppy, Piper & Frank — three silly, happy-go-lucky calves who quickly figured out that if they made enough noise, the humans would eventually show up with room service. 😂🍼

These three have been bottle fed, spoiled with attention, and have NEVER been shy about making their presence known when mealtime is running approximately 30 seconds late.

Our little crew has changed, though! Piper and Frank have both headed off to new farms where they have jobs to do, while Poppy is still here at Granite Ridge Farm holding down the fort…and making sure we don’t forget when it’s time to eat.

Bottle calves sure have a way of wiggling their way into your heart. ❤️

The wait is over…and those rain dances must have worked! 😂☔️

We’re picking our sweet corn fresh every day, and we pick it young—when those kernels are tender, juicy, and oh-so-sweet. 🌽

No sitting around waiting. When you buy corn from us, you’re getting sweet corn that was picked fresh from our family farm.

There’s something pretty darn satisfying about planting a tiny seed, watching it grow all summer, worrying about whether Mother Nature will cooperate…and finally getting to say:

☔️ RAIN! Glorious rain! ☔️

We got some rain today! 🙌 It’s been spotty, and it seems like the majority of it keeps sliding just south of us…but at this point, we will gladly take every single drop we can get! 🌧️🌽

Now we wait and see if this little drink helps the crops — especially that sweet corn! 🤞🌽

And THANK YOU to everyone who took our request and did their rain dances or sent a little pray up. 🙏 And, especially to the cowboy we caught dancing at the church picnic last night. 😉🤠💃 Apparently, it worked!

🌽 SWEET CORN UPDATE 🌽

Well…we’ve got the best-looking sweet corn crop we’ve ever had! 🙌 The stalks are tall, green, and absolutely beautiful.

There’s just one little problem…

WE. NEED. RAIN. ☔️
Like…real bad. 😂

The lack of rain has really slowed down the cob development. The plants look great, but those ears need moisture to fill out and give us that delicious sweet corn we’re all waiting for.

So for now…the sweet corn is staying right where it is — on the stalks. 🌽

We’re watching, waiting, and hoping Mother Nature sends us a good soaking soon.

In the meantime, everybody get out there and DO YOUR RAIN DANCES! 💃☔️🌽

We’ll keep you posted. Hopefully the next sweet corn update includes the words: IT’S READY! 🤞

We’ve got something NEW for the dogs! 🐾🦴

We had these beautiful beef bones in our Farm Store for people to make homemade bone broth… but let’s just say they weren’t exactly flying off the shelves. 😂

So we started researching another way to put them to good use, and after a lot of learning, we decided to cold smoke them for 72 hours. The result? A long-lasting, natural chew your pup will love!
