We sure are thankful to see the sunshine again! ☀️

With the limited sunlight this spring, our tomato plants — even though they were well established — experienced a bit of shock once the sun returned. The sudden intense sunlight caused some foliar damage to the tops of the plants. This is the first time we’ve experienced something quite like this.

We’re especially thankful for our farming friends who guided us to be patient, avoid pruning, and give the plants time to adjust naturally. Already, they are bouncing back beautifully, and new healthy growth is coming on strong! 🌱🍅

Brooke County Farmers Market starts this Wednesday 4-7pm at 535 Charles Street, Wellsburg! We will have limited produce available in early June, with a little more arriving each week as the season grows!

Farming brings new life lessons every day — no matter your age.

Earlier this spring, after a strong wind storm, Mylah’s duck went missing. It wasn’t just a duck to her — it was her best buddy. She was devastated, and as parents, it was heartbreaking to watch her hurt. She had spent so much time working with that duck — teaching it to be held, carried, and even “walked” as it waddled faithfully behind her.

In the middle of that hard moment, we rallied together — because on the farm, just like in life, we are together through the good times and the bad. Mylah asked if she could try incubating duck eggs, so we decided to give it a go. She carefully tracked the days, helped monitor the eggs, and was incredibly successful.

Now the ducklings are growing fast, and we have no doubt it won’t be long before they’re waddling right behind her too. 🐥💛

I spy something ... RED! 🍅

A new Family Roots Farm record — our first red slicer tomato of the season was picked on 5/26!

While we won’t have red slicers available in quantity for a few more weeks, we couldn’t help but share a little excitement. Summer harvest season is getting closer!☀️

Charlie recently had the opportunity to travel to Vermont with our friends at Weaver Maple Supplies for a dealer meeting and open house. During the trip, he toured the Leader H2O Innovation manufacturing plant and the Lapierre supply house in Swanton, VT.

He also made time to visit Brandon Shady Maple and Goodrich Maple Farm—two operations that have been on his bucket list to visit for years. Seeing their scale in person was incredible: Shady Maple operates around 95,000 taps, while Goodrich Maple Farm runs 140,000 taps.

When Charlie got home and started sharing stories and photos, the kids had some priceless reactions:
“Wow, I’m jealous—their evaporator is bigger than our sugar shack!” — Mylah
“I’m feeling a bit embarrassed. Can you imagine all those lines?” — Grady

If you couldn’t resist the warm weather and picked up plants, don’t forget to cover them or bring them inside tonight!
The high tunnels are buttoned up and ready. Our apple trees are in bloom, but since it’s their first year we’ll be pruning the blossoms so the trees can put their energy back into growth.
Maybe Mother Nature will lend us a hand tonight.
