Farmers Market Season Recap 🌱🍅

What a season it has been! From the first market to the last, we’ve loved seeing familiar faces, meeting new customers, and sharing a little taste of Family Roots Farm with our community.

A special thank-you for your extra patience and encouragement when the kids were at our booth—counting money, making change, and helping customers. Those moments are just as important to us as the sales themselves. ❤️

Way Back Wednesday | 250 Years of Family, Farm & Tradition

This week, meet David Hervey, the second generation to call our farm home.

David was called to ministry and dedicated much of his life to serving the Lord. He led the Lower Buffalo Presbyterian Church and also preached once a month at the Wellsburg Presbyterian Church.

David remained deeply connected to the farm. He continued farming alongside his brother, Henry C. Hervey, carrying on the work and traditions passed down to them.

In a letter remembering David’s passing, his brother Henry C. Hervey wrote:

“His long life and calling, with closed eyes. He fell asleep. He died on the farm and within fifty rods of the spot where he was born.”

What a beautiful testament to a life rooted in faith, family, and the land. David spent his life serving both his community and the farm he called home. ❤️🌾

250 years later, his story is still part of ours. Check back next Wednesday as we uncover David Hervey's heirs.

🌳 Way Back Wednesday 🌳

For three generations, Merino sheep were the primary source of income on the Hervey homestead. The Northern Panhandle became well known for its sheep and high-quality wool, making the region an important part of the wool industry.

But times change.

By the early 1900s, wool prices began to decline, leaving the Hervey family with an important decision to make: What would come next for the farm?

Way Back Wednesday Recap

Over the past four weeks, we've been taking a step back in time to celebrate 250+ years of family, farm, and tradition.

Here's what we've uncovered so far:

📍 1775 – Henry Hervey claimed 400 acres of frontier land using tomahawk rights, laying the foundation for what would become eight generations of family farming. The original deed, signed by Patrick Henry, is on an animal hide!

🏡 Frontier Life – Building a homestead wasn't easy. As tensions grew on the frontier, Henry worked and defended the farm while Margaret and their children stayed at Fort Wells for safety. Their story is one of sacrifice, courage, and determination.

❤️ Margaret's Strength – After Henry's passing, Margaret carried the family forward. Raising nine children while helping manage the farm, her resilience ensured the Hervey legacy continued.

🧱 The Original Farmhouse – Built in the late 1700s using handmade bricks crafted from the farm's own clay, the original home stood for nearly 200 years and became the heart of generations of family life.

These stories are more than history—they're the foundation of who we are today. Every field, every spring, and every generation has helped shape Family Roots Farm into what it is today.

🌳 Way Back Wednesday 🌳

Have you ever wondered what the very first home on the farm looked like? We have, too. While it's possible there was once a log cabin, no records have ever confirmed it. The first documented home is believed to have been built in the late 1770s.

The family depended on the land for nearly everything they needed—and this farm provided. The rich clay soil was used to handcraft bricks, with every single brick made right here on the property. Crystal-clear spring water flowed from the hillsides, and a hand-dug well made daily life a little easier for those who called this place home.

That house stood for nearly two centuries before it was torn down in the late 1960s. But its story didn't end there.

Fred grew up in that very home and carries countless memories of life within its walls. He'll be sharing those memories with us as we continue our Way Back Wednesday journey through the generations.

We hope you'll join us each Wednesday as we step back in time and preserve the stories that helped shape this farm and the family who called it home. ❤️
