It’s goat talk time!

Today let’s talk horns, what they are and why goats need them.

There are many people who dehorn their goats. Their reason are valid and I totally understand.

Horned goats are at a higher risk of getting stuck in a fence. We’ve had it happen here.

Horned goats can accidentally hurt you. Horned goats can accidentally hurt another goat.

However, we do not dehorn and I’ll explain why. But first, why do goats have horns in the first place?

A goats horns main purpose is as a way to cool the goat in high temperatures. The way this works is by taking the warmed blood from the body and it gets taken to the horns, which are basically living bone cover by keratin. As the warm blood reaches the horns it gets cooled by the external environment and the cooled blood returns. This helps keep the goat from overheating. Goats also pant and rock their bodies to stay cool.

Another reason goats need their horns is for herd structure. Horns are often used as rank within the herd. The bigger your horns, the higher you are in rank. I’ve found this to be very true within my herd.

Horns are also great clue givers. They can help you guess a goat’s age and let you know a bit about their health. A goat that’s had chronic heavy parasites will have thin brittle horns. A goat that’s had mineral deficiency will also have weak horns.

Horns are also used to help reach branches and part thick brush.

Horns are used in defense against predators.

And let’s be honest, the most important reason to leave your goat’s horned is, they don’t have hands and goats are so itchy all the time. Horns make for the perfect itch scratcher.

Are horned goats more dangerous to be around? Maybe, but we’ve never had an issue that required anything close to needing a doctor. I’ve been bumped by horns, my hubby has caught a horn to the cheek but that’s about the worst of it.

Do horned herds have more injures? In our experience we’ve had one injury that required vet care and that was from a “suspected” horn to another goats belly. It could have been caused by something else, but we don’t know, so I’ll mention it. Over all I’d say no.

Our goats are a landrace breed and as such we feel they need to remain exactly how they were created and that’s with their beautiful horns.

A quick hello to some of my yearlings. I didn’t bend down, had on my ultra dark shades to protect my light sensitive eye and the rain made the ground wet so no dust. I’m gonna try to visit the rest after this next patch of rain moves out.

Today, many individuals gather with family and friends to enjoy BBQs or take advantage of Memorial Day sales, viewing today as just a paid day off.

However, today holds a profound significance as a day of remembrance.

It serves as a poignant reminder to reflect on the immense sacrifices made by numerous men, women, and children (yes even children if you go far enough back) who have fought for our nation throughout its history.

I am deeply honored to be an American citizen. While our country is not without its imperfections, as no nation is, it is undoubtedly a good country.

Today, I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to those who serve and have served and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, affording us the freedom we cherish today.

Let us never forget to appreciate the privileges we have and the price they cost.

Not much to talk about today as it’s been pouring rain. We mostly did light house (laundry and such) work and I made chicken stir fry which we are gonna eat in just a bit. My tummy has finally stopped flipping over.

My eye update is it’s clear now! It’s crazy to close my good eye and see how bad my vision was.

Isn’t it crazy how we slowly get use to something not realizing how bad it truly is. There is a life lesson in there. 🙂

I’m off to eat and then I’ll come visit.

Hubby sent me my goat fix photos for the day. Today was better but still having tummy troubles.

I made a loaf of herbed sourdough which made my constant helpers happy. I was able to do everything except bend down to scoop the flour. We keep flour in five gallon buckets so I couldn’t lift it to scoop myself.

My daughter had her therapy and her therapist brought me so homegrown zucchini which sure was nice!
