If you LOVE to cook, and you have a garden or fruit bearing trees, you know it's the best time of year!! Plentiful, fresh, clean, organic food! Exactly how it's meant to be 🧑‍🌾
Despite the heat, we're SO very Thankful for the seasonal abundance and short trip to the backyard grocer 😁
Chickens, sheep, turkeys, goats and alpaca roam the "aisles" sometimes demanding a "treat tax" to pass and never turning down a hug or pat on the head.
It's what makes sense to us, and in return we do our best to be good stewards of this land that keeps providing. FARM TO TABLE. It's not a trendy catch phrase. It's the Ideal. And for us, it's Paradise. So yes, we'll take the buckets of produce in the kitchen, tables of ripening fruit and tomatoes, muck boots outside the door, the extra work, the heat, the failures and the successes. We'll take the dirt, and the hitchhiking spiders that find their way inside the house via a bucket of cucumbers. We'll take it all. Every day. We choose this! 🧑‍🌾🧑‍🌾

~~~WELCOME TO JULY~~~

Jumping into the season of gardening, extreme heat, keeping animals comfortable in the extreme heat, trying to keep meals on the table, staying hydrated (lots of homemade "Gatorade"), battling weeds, predators and exhaustion. And after the end of an 11 year run of being vendors at the Dubuque Farmers' Market, we have finally found the time to focus on our property and take the time to truly live our Best Lives!! A more leisurely coffee hour, coupled with a sunset toast 🍷🍷 - often in the company of our favorite woolies - is about as perfect an existence as I can imagine 🌄

We're still creating product, albeit on a slower scale. Life moves a little slower now and that's just fine with us!! The "kids" really do enjoy our additional presence and seem so much more relaxed when we take the time to sit with them during the day. They know that as Shepherds, we represent protection and they are much more at ease when we are among them.

Outdoor Projects that have sat idle are finally being revisited and conquered. SLOWLY!

The heat is our biggest concern right now. We cautiously tackle immediate outdoor needs and know when to retreat back inside. The "kids" are thankful for all the fans, shade and cool well water 💦

Despite the heat, we're eternally grateful for the abundance of the season and the opportunity to Steward this incredibly giving piece of land! To all of our farmer, grower and producer friends, stay cool, stay safe, and may you continue to feel Called, Blessed and Thankful to be given such a worthy gift - to Grow our food and Steward the land!

No place we would rather be than outside this time of year! Planting and more planting.....garden starts, 2 new peach trees, bing cherry trees, Colorado Spruce and white pine! Tomatoes (San marzano, German striped, Brandywine) delicata squash, butternut squash, zucchini, pickles, dill, calendula, habaneros, Anaheim peppers, thyme, oregano, basil, lavender, parsley, string beans and more! Turkey and chicken helpers always providing entertainment!
This years group of young lambs have earned the #1 spot for escape artists so fence inspections have been nearly continuous the past few weeks. Shout out to Tim Stiers for his help with repairs!
Garlic scapes were at a full curl today so they were harvested in the cool, light rain while dreaming of garlic scape pesto 🤩
The days are long, but satisfying. The rewards of fresh veggies and culinary herbs just outside the kitchen door are a treat that my little culinary heart delights in! A most magical time of year to be sure!
I redeemed myself tonight by preparing a favorite dish for Mark after some very late night, less than exotic fare the past several days. His little pasta heart was ecstatic! We shared a lovely bottle of wine and counted our blessings. Truly farm to table and The only life we can possibly imagine 🧑‍🌾🧑‍🍳

And not a minute too soon! With next week's temps reaching near 90° - it was imperative to get the "coats" off these kids!!

Alex, our shearer, made it look easy - it's Not!!

34 sheep, 2 uncooperative alpaca, 68 shots, 5 sets of goat hooves, and all the while 41 young lambs running around the property noisily looking for their nearly unrecognizable "naked" momma's!!

Today, EVERYONE is thrilled for their summer haircuts and happily, contentedly grazing in the sunny meadow 💖💖💖

It's a big job and one we are always happy to be checking off our list ✅

Huge shout-out to Alex and his wife Elizabeth for their calm demeanor, expert skill set and willingness to help catch a couple of "crazies" that were less than excited to be shorn 😜

Now the real fun begins - cleaning and creating with all of this freshly shorn loveliness 😍😍🐑🐏🦙

Exuberant lambs enjoying the Spring grass, Farm to Table meals, bringing color to the farm in the form of Spring flowers, enjoying a glass of wine at sunset with our sweet "kids"....these are a few of my favorite things 🎶🎵

Truly heartfelt thanks for this piece of land, our incredible momma's who outdid themselves during lambing season this year with a sea of beautiful babies, the ability to grow and produce a large portion of our own food and the peace and freedom to Steward the land and enjoy its abundance 🧑‍🌾

The last photo in the reel is a powerful prayer shared by my brother and a timely reminder to continually give thanks, place your trust in Him, ask for what you need and always seek truth!

Celebrating the return of Market season with a GLORIOUS bouquet from Clara Joyce Flowers and the fact that because we are no longer vendors sitting in the heat all day, I can finally buy fresh flowers EARLY in the morning and get them home and enjoy them before the heat gets to them.

Y'all, I can't even begin to describe what a big deal this is to me! I ADORE fresh flowers and what they add to the feel and warmth of a home. The artistry and use of exotic blooms as well as more simple pieces results in a feast for the eyes and senses that is unmatched! Thank you to Drew and the entire team at Clara Joyce for your artistry, passion and commitment to community!!
