~~~SHEARING DAY ~~~
And not a minute too soon! With next week's temps reaching near 90Β° - it was imperative to get the "coats" off these kids!!
Alex, our shearer, made it look easy - it's Not!!
34 sheep, 2 uncooperative alpaca, 68 shots, 5 sets of goat hooves, and all the while 41 young lambs running around the property noisily looking for their nearly unrecognizable "naked" momma's!!
Today, EVERYONE is thrilled for their summer haircuts and happily, contentedly grazing in the sunny meadow πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–
It's a big job and one we are always happy to be checking off our list βœ…
Huge shout-out to Alex and his wife Elizabeth for their calm demeanor, expert skill set and willingness to help catch a couple of "crazies" that were less than excited to be shorn 😜
Now the real fun begins - cleaning and creating with all of this freshly shorn loveliness πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ‘πŸπŸ¦™
Early May camera reel.....
Exuberant lambs enjoying the Spring grass, Farm to Table meals, bringing color to the farm in the form of Spring flowers, enjoying a glass of wine at sunset with our sweet "kids"....these are a few of my favorite things 🎢🎡
Truly heartfelt thanks for this piece of land, our incredible momma's who outdid themselves during lambing season this year with a sea of beautiful babies, the ability to grow and produce a large portion of our own food and the peace and freedom to Steward the land and enjoy its abundance πŸ§‘β€πŸŒΎ
The last photo in the reel is a powerful prayer shared by my brother and a timely reminder to continually give thanks, place your trust in Him, ask for what you need and always seek truth!
Happy May!!
Celebrating the return of Market season with a GLORIOUS bouquet from Clara Joyce Flowers and the fact that because we are no longer vendors sitting in the heat all day, I can finally buy fresh flowers EARLY in the morning and get them home and enjoy them before the heat gets to them.
Y'all, I can't even begin to describe what a big deal this is to me! I ADORE fresh flowers and what they add to the feel and warmth of a home. The artistry and use of exotic blooms as well as more simple pieces results in a feast for the eyes and senses that is unmatched! Thank you to Drew and the entire team at Clara Joyce for your artistry, passion and commitment to community!!
At the end of a gravel road, in a small, unassuming, quiet town, live some of the sweetest, most beautiful "jersey girls" you will ever lay eyes on!! "Lilith" and "Nella" happily posed in their picturesque meadow and even sashayed over to bat their eyelashes at me and give me a closer look πŸ˜‚
Lucky for me, they also produce the most delicious milk and cream, offered for sale at their farm!!
Places like this really do exist! Places where people truly care about their animals and the spaces these magnificent creatures call home!
Bluff Creek Farm LLC is a local dairy farm just a short drive east of Maquoketa. In addition to milk and cream, they offer butter, baked goods and locally crafted items. Rich and Lisa provide excellent care to their "girls" and in return, the girls provide Premium A2A2 milk!! Check out their page and give them a follow for more info!
If you need me I'll be in the kitchen making homemade ice cream......πŸ‘€πŸ˜πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹
Dear April,
In true form, you wowed us with your Hope for Spring, your gentle way of bringing soft color to the land after a monochromatic winter, and pushing us to our limits with a lambing season more than dotted with challenging weather. Despite the chaos of the Season, the rewards are unmistakable! FORTY ONE breathtaking beauties were added to our numbers this year!!
Yesterday we welcomed a surprise lamb from a very small/young ewe. "Cornelius" chose a lovely day to arrive though, and is thriving!!
Two tiny bottle lambs, Emmett and Tinkerbell, get their little lamb zoomies just before dusk, so in true farmer fashion we grab a glass of wine and sit outside and let them entertain us as they race around the property with the rest of the young lambs until we call their names and decide it's time to tuck them in for the night😁
The alpaca understand the assignment and greet each new lamb as they are born, promising to protect and defend these little ones. It's an act of sweetness that's just incredible to behold!
With planting season and then shearing just around the corner, it's an exciting, exhausting, ridiculous, espresso fueled, time of year. And if it weren't, we'd be bored as hell.......
Enjoy a small snippet of what April looks like here at the Ranch πŸ˜˜πŸ™πŸ’šπŸ«©πŸ§‘β€πŸŒΎπŸ‘πŸπŸ¦™β˜•β˜•β˜•β˜•β˜•β˜•β˜•
One day you're living your best life in LA with 2 of your daughters, celebrating a daughter's Birthday and seeing her perform on a stage in a dream role......
The next day you're back home living your other best life, elbow deep in the business end of a laboring ewe, trying to manipulate a lamb that's in the wrong position so it can be safely delivered. Covered in placenta and other things too sensitive to describe to city folk, the juxtaposition between these two worlds is surreal at times.
Tonight we welcomed triplets from an older "seasoned" ewe. All three needed help being brought into this world. I chuckled at the spectacle in the mirror tonight. 4 days ago I was in a different world!
Back home, I'm immediately humbled and filthy, but in a world I understand! What a treat though, to have the opportunity to see my daughters, experience live theater in LA, as well as visit all of our favorite spots!! Until next time, LA!!
February 15th we had our first two lambs of the season! Nothing for two weeks. Then the weather changed and BAMMM!!! 19 lambs on the ground and 13 more ewes still due to deliver 😳! Lots of espresso, non existent sleep schedule, bottle feedings under the stars, chasing bald eagles from the yard (babies are all inside stalls, but eagles still doing flyovers looking for strays.) It's absolutely a labor of love, but oh the rewards!!! Enjoy our most recent photo roll of some of the most beautiful sheep east and west of the Mississippi!!
Also celebrating the return of turkey egg season!!
It's our most anticipated, sleepless time of the year so be extra forgiving or allow extra time when ordering product!!
~~~JOY.....AFTER SORROW~~~

Yesterday we experienced both sides of farming. The hard, ugly, tragic, gruesome and sorrowful side, followed (Thankfully) by the sweet, joyful, fulfilling and miraculous side! Two first time moms. Two very different outcomes. Mom #1 - through no fault of her own, developed an extreme prolapse and because of her heartbreaking suffering, among other issues, she was put down. Culling an animal is indisputably one of the hardest and worst jobs on a farm. Because of our close relationship with our animals that are each named at birth, this is especially heart wrenching. But God is gracious! Immediately following this tragic event, another first time mom went into labor. It was a hard labor. Progress was painstakingly slow and hard to watch. We stay with these animals, monitoring them and watching for signs to intervene. There's a point of no return when we intuitively (and through decades of experience on my end) know when to jump in. As we readied ourselves to try to isolate and catch this very large and somewhat "feral" girl, she raced off to the back of the barn, gave everything she had left to give, and delivered a beautiful little boy! She was not immediately smitten with him. We watched and waited. Sometimes after a traumatic birth, the moms want nothing to do with their lambs. It's tough to watch. It was reasonably warm last night, but this boy was wet. After drying him, and getting a little milk in his belly, mom started to warm up to him! This morning, both mom and baby look great! It's a day of celebration here today!
