Take 2 of the winter chilli grow. Made hot boxes with compost as the heat source. Will put lids on at night to keep the heat in. This Freestate winter is not for sissy's 😆. Making another box for San Marzano tomatoes. I want to do some sun drying this summer.

So the winter grazing is non existent. Having to feed the sheep and pigs , and it's costing alot. So this is Russian blue grass. Will be planting this out in a closed off camp and growing it for seed. Hopefully by next winter my entire plot will be covered. It can handle droughts , flooding , heat and freezing temps. This batch is growing fast in these wintery conditions.

So haven't posted in a while. The temperature here has dropped to well below freezing. All the summer seedlings sprouted...

So haven't posted in a while. The temperature here has dropped to well below freezing. All the summer seedlings sprouted and then got killed by the first -7 c evening. So that was a epic fail. Poly tunnel in the Freestate doesn't work in the middle of winter without some form of heat source. So now I'm back to the drawing board. Have to figure out what heat source I can use with my solar. The challenge is the solar also not getting many hours of good sun this time of the year. And I need to get a early start to the growing season.

Doesn't look like much... But my chilli seeds are sprouting in the tunnel in the middle of a frigid Freestate winter without any artificial heating. Will be planting my tomato seeds next month. I have big plans for sun dried tomatoes.

And nothing goes to waist. Pigs get carrot offcuts and the skins get cooked in with the rest of the veg I harvest daily ...

So we making chicken wraps tonight with coleslaw. Really impressed with how quickly these carrots have grown. Absolutely no thinning out hence a few twisted ones but I stall have hundreds to harvest. Planted them about 10weeks ago. And so much sweeter than shop bought.

Just got our first naked neck chickens. I think this particular breed is often overlooked as a dual purpose breed on homesteads. I originally got boschvelders ,but not impressed. Great layers but carcasses on roosters are all bone and very little meat. These naked necks have a body that's almost as meaty as a broiler. Was super impressed when I picked them up for the first time. I think this might be the future of my dual purpose flock.

We felt like flapjacks.. But didn't have syrup. No problem, we made some homemade golden syrup. So easy.
