What I’m currently working on in my business…

is a little reminder that opportunities don’t always arrive looking like opportunities.

Sometimes they look like three embroidery hoops and a pile of old doilies from the op shop.

A while ago, I made a doily chandelier to decorate my market stall.

Nothing fancy.

Just a creative idea I had rattling around in my head.

Then something unexpected happened.

People kept asking if it was for sale.

Over and over again.

And it got me thinking.

One thing I’ve learned while building a flower farm is that you need to stay open to ideas.

Not every idea has to be big.

Not every idea has to become a business.

Not every idea will work.

But every now and then, one of those random thoughts turns into something people genuinely love.

So while everyone sees the flowers, there are always a dozen other projects, experiments and ideas happening behind the scenes.

Some work.

Some don’t.

Some become products.

Some become lessons.

And some start with a trip to the op shop and end up becoming something completely unexpected.

Here’s a little sneak peek of what I’m currently making for the flower farm;
High Tea Hire: Yes
For Sale: Soon
And more…

Currently featuring- 11 completed
28 under construction
Uncounted number of doilies in a 90litre box 🤯

The part of running a business people don’t talk about…

is managing expectations.

Particularly when you’re still in the start-up phase.

I think once people see a business name, a logo, social media pages and products for sale, they naturally assume you’ve “made it”.

What they don’t see is that many small businesses are still being built on sacrifice.

Every dollar has a job.

Every purchase is considered.

Every decision comes with a trade-off.

I get messages from people saying they’re coming out to visit the flower farm and asking for the address.

Or requests for sponsorships.

Or assumptions that because there’s a business, there must be a budget.

And I completely understand where that comes from.

But the reality is often very different.

Many small businesses aren’t sitting on piles of profit.

They’re reinvesting.

Learning.

Growing.

Taking risks.

Trying to build something sustainable from the ground up.

At the moment, every spare dollar I have is going back into seeds, irrigation, infrastructure, soil and growing the farm.

That’s what most people don’t see.

The flowers are visible.

The investment behind them isn’t.

Supporting a small business doesn’t always mean asking what it can give you.

Sometimes it simply means buying the flowers.

Sharing the post.

Telling a friend.

Cheering someone on while they’re building something.

And trust me, that support goes a lot further than most people realise.

I did my first wedding expo today. Weddings Whitsundays

I lived and breathed it for weeks. Overthought it. Changed my mind a hundred times. Was completely organised… until I wasn’t. A cyclone of creative chaos, really.

There were flowers, flower petal confetti, seeds, high tea hire, doily chandeliers, and enough wind to keep things interesting.

A huge thank you to The Creek Whitsundays for having me. What an absolute dream venue to exhibit at.

I’m tired, wind blown , grateful, and already thinking about what I’d do differently next time.

What a great day.

A big shout out to Libby Ryding 🌺 Florist/Nature lover & Pete for helping me out.

And not to forget the man who makes everything possible, ♥️Dale♥️.

Can you tell what I picked up today and what’s coming soon?

This is what happened when I stopped listening to every opinion…

and started listening to my intuition.

My ambition.

My gut.

And the people who genuinely wanted to see me succeed.

When I first started talking about growing flowers, there were plenty of reasons why it wouldn’t work.

The climate.
The location.
The cost.
The time.
The risk.

And to be fair, some of those concerns were valid.

Starting anything new comes with uncertainty.

But at some point I realised that if I listened to every doubt, every warning and every prediction of failure, I’d never plant a single seed.

So I planted them anyway.

And then I planted more.

The flowers grew.

Not a few flowers.

Thousands of them.

And then I sold them.

Not just occasionally.

But consistently.

What surprises me most isn’t that people doubt big ideas.

It’s how often we talk people out of even trying.

Sometimes it’s done with love.
Sometimes it’s done with fear.
Sometimes it’s because we’re trying to protect people from disappointment.

But nothing grows if it never gets planted.

Including dreams.

So these days I still listen to advice.

I just pay closer attention to the people who are building things than the people who are only predicting outcomes.

Because I’d rather fail attempting something extraordinary than spend my life wondering what might have happened if I’d tried.
