Last month, La Vigna’s Ann Marie spent two days exploring Ningxia, one of China’s leading w**e regions located on the edge of the Gobi Desert.
Visiting five w**eries, Ann Marie discovered a region shaped by extremes. Sitting at around 1,200 metres above sea level, Ningxia experiences an arid climate with hot summers, freezing winters and just 200mm of annual rainfall. Irrigation from the Yellow River plays a vital role in making viticulture possible in this challenging environment.
We asked Ann Marie to share a few highlights from her visit:
▪️The vineyards themselves are fascinating. Vines are often planted on a 45-degree angle and spaced further apart than we typically see in Australia. This allows them to be bent down and buried over winter to protect them from extreme cold and frost - a very labour-intensive process!
▪️Ningxia is a young and ambitious w**e region. Many w**eries are led by second-generation w**emakers who have gained valuable experience overseas, including Australia.
▪️The w**es are fresh and beautifully concentrated. I saw Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Riesling and Marselan – with Marselan in particular standing out as a variety with exciting potential for the future of Chinese w**e.
▪️Overall, Ningxia is a fascinating region with passionate w**emakers. It’s a real glimpse into the future of Chinese w**e.
