“Farming is about doing the right things at the right time with growing things and helping Mother Nature work her magic. As farmers, we are there to guide the process, using the tools and knowledge we have, but in the end, we are always depending on the variability of nature itself. Every season is different, and no two years are ever the same.
This year, with a lot of hard work, patience, and maybe a little bit of luck, we are seeing what happens when the stars seem to align perfectly. I have to say, I am pretty proud of the bountiful crops we are seeing this year. I just love walking through the orchards, the berry fields and the pumpkin patch and taking in the sight of so much abundance.
The Jonagolds especially have caught my attention. We grow about 8,000 Jonagold trees, and this week I found one tree so heavily loaded with apples that the top actually broke off! Thankfully, it only happened to one tree, but it sure is a pretty good testament to what an amazing growing year we are having.
And I have to say, I have a real soft spot for our Jonagolds. Our southwest marine climate here in the Fraser Valley is just about the perfect place to grow these mouth-watering apples. They have that wonderful combination of being sweet with just enough tartness to make you want to eat the whole thing right down to the core.
I am pretty proud to share this bounty with all the friends of the farm who come out every year to enjoy these special apples. There is something pretty amazing about growing good food, watching it come to life, and then sharing it with the people who appreciate where it comes from.”
