Silverudds Update ✅
The good, the bad and the ugly… 🧬
The good news is we now have a DNA confirmed flock homozygous O/O for the blue egg gene ✅ 🥳😍🇨🇦
What that means is all the offspring from this day forward are guaranteed to produce blue (green) eggs.
The bad news is, I found out we had three (a c**k and two hens) in the flock were o/O heterozygous. This means that while the hens lay beautifully coloured eggs, they genetically only have 50% chance of passing on the blue gene. This is why a couple of you are reporting your pullets are laying tan coloured eggs… So Sorry! 😢
The good news is… I am offering for very reasonable, this beautiful trio of Silverudds that I’ve pulled from the main flock due to being heterozygous.
This is still a great opportunity for someone wanting to work with this wonderful breed. They will produce offspring that 50% of will lay blue (green) eggs. Testing for the blue gene is easy enough that you can find out which ones to keep in your flock. With these birds on the conservation list it’s important to work together to improve them. The available trio is pictured. A very sweet splash (the least dominant rooster) with a splash and a black hen. They were recently dewormed with ivermectin.
They turned two in November and have been the most fantastic winter layers and are a very worthwhile breed to work with 💚
As for the ugly? Well, I’m still trying to come up with something.
