Rain and slightly clearer skies, and getting off the farm for something just for us and not centered around grief really lifted the mood around here.

Often, I'll just keep pushing and pushing and pushing. But trying to recognize limits and trust that it is ok to stop and do what need to do for one's self and loved ones.

That included cancelling our "Around the world" fine dining event this coming Saturday 22 August. With unexpected time off the farm in recent weeks with the passing of Don, prioritizing family and base farming had to be front and center. As much as I love hosting dinners, they take a LOT of work over and above general farming. I had to make a hard call and felt terrible, but tried to ignore the ol' inner critic and acknowledge the reality of what pushing through would mean for my stress/physical/mental health, and chose to prioritize making space for supporting family and myself.

Thanks to those that had tickets, they should all be refunded now. If not, let me know. We appreciate the understanding and kind words, and hope to host you at the farm in future.

This means we are really, incredibly excited for the Fall Farm Feast dinner on Friday September 18. It will be all the more special to celebrate abundant food and community after a challenging year. There is still space if you are interested, tickets at the link in our bio.

Thanks for supporting our farm and local food in general; it's truly what keeps things chugging away here, even when it gets tough! So grateful to have such supportive community in our area.

Got my Sumi Soaker irrigation system in the mail a couple days ago thanks to Thiessen Tillage Equipment

Gathered the extras I needed from our legendary local farm supply store and gave it whirl for the first time.

First impression: I'm impressed. It's easy, thorough watering. I think this may well fix my issue with watering in new transplants and germinating crops in most scenarios.

Time will tell. I invested in a lot of new tools this year, some I like and find good value in more than others. I'm considering doing a Mel's hot take on tools, would you like to hear my thoughts on things like the Neversink tilther, Growers and Co wheel hoe, the two paperpot models, Neversink zipper, the Modern Grower drop seeder?

Let me know what tools you are most interested in my thoughts on in the comments.

Musings on motivation and energy and August.... Or lack thereof.

August, also known and Slog-ust in the farming community, is hard, this one feels particularly so.

The never ending hustle, plus the smoke, the grief for a loved one gone, the compassion for those that have lost their farms, homes and more in the fires across the province and country, all feels overwhelmingly heavy.

The smoke in this image is, I know, nothing compared to what others are dealing with. But working in it hours and days on end takes a toll nonetheless. The plants also don't like it either; though it helps keep temps down, it also limits sunlight and coats plants with fine particulates and it feels like a lot of things are growing slower than they might usually. I should probably take off all our shade cloths.

Trying to push through this time of year is hard. Dragging oneself out of bed and stumbling to the coffee machine for one, two, three coffees, looking at the list of things that need doing with varying degrees of urgency and not wanting to do any of it.

Dreading being out in the smoke all day, choosing between the lethargy, congestion and headaches, or the uncomfortable, smothering feeling of wearing a mask.

Trying to keep a smile on your face, trying to remember that we chose this because we do love it. Even in the worst times, it's better than sitting in an office staring at a computer, right? Right? Is that still true?

Fellow farmers, keep at it! We're in it together, venting about the reality of it helps too, right?! It's not always like this, but when it is, it really is.

Motivation is needed: who has some tips?? How do you push through August??

We lost a Clutch Farm OG last weekend.

Ang's dad Don passed away peacefully in his home after some health challenges.

Don was a doting father, much loved by his family and all who knew him. He had a long career Iron working, travelling all over BC and Alberta building many structures you know and have used.

He was also an integral in the early days of Clutch Farm. Helping us to build many of our original structures, often working with our meagre budget and sourcing materials from his construction buddies to help us out. He built or helped us build our early little greenhouse/nursery, our farm stand, our first walk in cooler, and first high tunnel. He built our winter chicken coop, fixed many a fence and gate, and helped us re-roof our house. Don was a kind, generous and hard working man and we are reminded of him daily in all that he has done for us. He loved farming and animals and being out here in the Koots helping his daughter and partner live out a dream. In so many ways, we wouldn't be where we are now without his support.

Public displays like this feel kind of weird, but it shall serve as a memorial to a true gem that was gone too soon. Never enough time. We love and miss you, Don.
